View Full Version : Help with chosing another car

Hopefully the GTI will be sold sometime soon, and I can start looking for another car. Right now I can't decide if I want to go used or buy another new car that is much cheaper than the GTI.
I like having a warranty now after having had two cars with them and that is very appealing to me. If I buy something new it has to be cheap and good on gas and have cheaper insurance than the GTI.
The only thing I can think of now that fits all that would be the toyota yaris, the rabbit is another good choice but still a little more than I want to spend on a car.
Just for some info, I am looking for the car to be a daily transport as I will still have a VW only as a project car though, kind of why I don't want another VW daily driver because I tend to spend money on them. Any ideas would be great as longs as they are practical and cheap, and leasing is out due to unknown mileage that I could or could not have in the future, I would rather buy.

I know so little about what is out there but I'll throw in my 2 cents...
Hyundai's are good cars for the money, you just have to deal with the club pickin on you. When you think about it Hyundai is very much how VW started out as the "Peoples Car"
If you want a daily late model car I would look into it. Their resell value is poo and the local market is full of em so you could probably find something pretty cheap that would last a good amout of time.

If I were you I would not buy a new car or anything with a decent payment. I would save up or borrow 3k, you can find a pretty decent car for that amount of money. I would look at older civics, even MK3s are pretty cheap drivers.

Honda fit
werd. Eli bought one and can't stop raving about the mileage, space inside, comfort, and reliability. If you are thinking about the Yaris, I'd look into both.

I could never buy a hyundai, I have been in a few and I just don't like them. Honda Fit is another option to consider, they seem like a good car for the money. I have been considering used, but I just don't want to work on the car I am driving. A new car would allow me to just take it to the dealer if it breaks or something, the main reason why I traded my MK3 in on the Beetle was so I wouldn't have to fix the car every month. There are definately plenty of choices for a cheap new car, just wish some of them were better choices:p .

my vote, despite not having a warranty, is a passat wagon. they can be had, with a few miles on it, for under 10k. you know how to do all the maintance, it's huge inside, 5 speed 1.8Ts get pretty decent gas milage. they're perfect highway cruisers, etc.
just a thought. it's sad to see the GTI go.

if you must have a warranty (seems like you will not buy one without) there is no reason to get anything other than a Hyundai. Ours lasted 110k, and it died an early death ONLY because we never did mantanince on the transmission. Otherwise the engine/body/everything was still in very good working order.

IMHO you should follow Ryan's advice.

the only problem with a fit is finding one, they are in very heavy demand right now and difficult to get, adn you will not have any wiggle room on the price. I saw a yaris hatch yesterday and I liked the looks of it, they get better mileage than the fit as as well and will hold thier value nearly as well. ANother option is a scion xb or xa theya re pretty heap and reliable, I really liked my XB in some ways but in the end it just wasn't me.

Passats are maintenance intensive and I believe the reason why he wants a warranty is so he can take it to the dealer whenever something breaks.

Yep not to mention Hondas are bulletproof.
My mom's 2003 (first year) Pilot has 50k miles on it right now and the only thing that has gone wrong outside of factory warranty was a bad driver's door switch. The only thing that affected was the interior lights turning on. Even though we bought the hondacare extended warranty to 100k, the dealer didn't charge us the $50 deductable & goodwilled it (part was something like $10 and it took a half hour to replace). No repairs were performed during the factory warranty except for the TSBs for the transmission oil line upgrade and the rear brake pad shims.

Just to further prop Honda. You really can just drive them and not really do anything besides basic maintenance.
We bought a Civic new in 1998, paid $11750 year end deal. We sold it this year for $4800 with 84k. The car never had a single warranty issue..never even used it. I had to replace the exhaust center piece twice $80 each time. Besides that I did one rear wheel bearing at 70k which I think was because I frequently hauled really heavy stuff in it. I loaded 6 transaxles in the car and drove to CT for example.
We have a '02 CRV now that has had zero issues in 65K besides rear brake sliders getting gummed up.

Honda>vw (well basically any Asian import blows away the reliability of our Vw's)
flame me all you want but it's true, Cate's 96 civic has 260+ on it and just replaced the (edit: ORIGINAL) wheel bearing, and o2 sensor to get it inspected. I wish my car had that reliability streak. my old 85 jetta did, but that was a fluke I'm convinced. Cate's car has been trouble free for most of it's life AND still gets 400 miles out of a 10 gal tank.
If I didn't like working on cars I wouldn't own a vw.
that may be my new sig...
Yaris's look pretty cool too

My only concern for the fit is that I have heard they are going for more than msrp because of the demand however the yaris while not having a flexible msrp are still going for that. I am going to check out both the fit and yaris soon, those are my main choices right now. Everything else I just don't care for, these two atleast have price a reliability going for them. I will know more when I can drive each and see what I think, might have to do something soon.

Don't forget to look at the total cost of ownership... i.e. investigate insurance costs (wouldn't be surprised if the Yaris or Fit are more pricey to insure because they are so new.... though from what I hear insurance costs these days have as much to do with your credit rating as the cost of repair if in a accident).
Both are neat cars (though I've never liked the fit/finish Honda interiors and becuase of that I would probably like the Toyota more)...

Thanks Rich, that is a big concern that i forgot to mention. The GTI has high insurance for me because it is considered a fast car, I figure the honda isn't as bad but still high because of their theft issues and the toyota should be less. I have to talk with my insurance company to see what they figure.

Warren when my mom got the CRV there wasn't any in area to even test drive. She had to wait 3-4 months to get it. The MSRP was still the same though despite the huge demand.

I heard on the radio that the mitsubishi now has a 10yr/100k warranty, a stripped down lancer might be decent.

Right now I have no idea what I am doing. I have been looking at other stuff and coming up with more ideas I should stay away from. Who knows what I will end up with when the GTI sells.

I'd say buy a .:R32 MkIV in DBP. That's if you can find one with low miles on it.
