After taking the car out for an hour yesterday it became immediately apparent that new motor mounts were needed. Anyone got a brand they like or that can be used for A2 VR swaps? I'd just use regular MK3 type motor mounts right?

what Stu said. It completely determines what mounts you need.

If you don't know, yank the old one(s) and post a pic.

I would go to germanautoparts.com and check out the pictures.. match them up with what you have. VR mounts didn't change that much compared to the 4cyl cars. Look at the pics of the old and newer cars and that will yield your answer.
Its just the subframe also not the rear subframe.

thats a 91 GTI 4cyl rear subframe. if your passengerside mount looks like that you need Mk2 mounts. If your passengerside looks more like the driverside mount you need Mk3 mounts.
For the front crossmember I'm pretty sure the Mk2 and Mk3 mounts differ by the number of bolts they use to mount to the cross bar. Mk2 mounts using 2, Mk3 mounts using 1.

If that is the rear subframe, where is the front subframe?
