Warren told me about this the other night and I finally stumbled on this blurb about the plans for a passat coupe and this pic....

VW look set to try to attract Mercedes customers with a coupe style Passat, codenamed the CC, which will rival the Mercedes CLS. The unnamed four door coupe will be manufactured at the VW factory at Emden in Northern Germany and is set for a 2008 launch.

Rumours have been rife for a while now that VW would add a coupe to their line-up, and these rumours were confirmed in a VW media press release for the Speciality Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas. In the media release VW USA admitted that a ?2+2 sports coupe? was in the pipeline following the release of the EOS Coupe Cabriolet and the development of new technology for the VW Range.

Although no details of the vehicle itself have been released it is expected that the Coupe will have features of the new model VW Passat and the new Eos Coupe Cabriolet, and will have the underpinnings for the 2006 Jetta. It is also expected that three engines will be available in the coupe with the 3.2 litre V6 engine of the Golf R32 and the top end of the model line-up. The VW coupe is also set to be significantly cheaper than the CLS whilst offering all the technology and great performance you would expect from a Volkswagen.

why target a specific car that really doesnt sell much (the CLS)? Where is the Corrado?

Um . . . . haven't they learned from the phaeton?

Leave the luxo / sporty cars for audi . . . . VW gets the affordable fun market . . .

The 3.2 is such an antiquated engine anyways . . .

Current talk (in regards to a new Corrado type sports car/coupe - not the Passat coupe) has it will be a "Sirocco"...

Volkswagen to Build Scirocco in Portugal Plant
Text from Reuters UK.
HAMBURG (Reuters) - Volkswagen will build a successor to the Scirocco sport coupe at its plant in Setubal, Portugal, Europe's biggest carmaker said on Tuesday, reviving a model that was first popular in the 1970s.

A company spokesman said VW had made the decision early this year but had announced in the past only that it would bring a new model to Portugal without saying which one.

He insisted the decision had nothing to do with a standoff with labour over VW's plans to extend the work week for staff in western Germany to 35 hours from 28.8 at no extra pay, an idea labour leaders have rejected.

Awarding the car to Setubal is a blow to VW's main German plant in Wolfsburg, which needs more work to fill idle capacity.

VW has said 20,000 jobs in Germany are at risk unless it can boost productivity and cut labour costs that are the highest in the global car industry.

The Scirocco was popular in the 1970s and 1980s and there has been speculation that VW would revive the model based on the VW Golf.

Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper quoted company sources as saying Scirocco production would start in 2008 and said industry observers expected annual output of more than 100,000 units.

The Setubal plant already makes the VW Eos coupe-cabriolet plus the VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra vans. The vans are reaching the end of their model life cycles.

As to the Coupe idea... I do think they are shooting too high at the Merc, but the Honda Accord and Toyata Camary are large coupes.... situating a product just above that but maybe not as pricey as the Infiinty and lexus mid size coupes. may not be a bad idea.

a 4 door coupe?

exactly what I was thinking! How can it be a coupe w/ 4 door handles? 2 doors, but 4 door handles?

I think this might be a more acurate picture, but nothing has been officially released as far as I know. I think VW confirmed it but who knows if it will happen. I did hear that it will have the 3.6L and the possibilty of volkswagen bringing a turbo six to the market which would be used in more than this car. I think its a good idea, maybe not aiming it at a specific car but adding more selection to the passat line. I hope when they say cheaper, they mean in the $30's price wise.

VW would be better off spending the money on training their dealerships to respond better to their customer's service needs than producing a car that will bomb.
