I met a few of you guys at the gtg at Johnny Angels and I was wondering if anyone could help me out.

Last night I basically tore the bumper off the front of my gti. I was pulling out my friends yard and it just got caught on something basically. I was wondering if anyone had the know how on how to fix this so I dont have to take it to a dealership and get raped. Id rather throw somebody else some cash or something. Please let me know asap. 657-3844. Thanks guys.

Name is Warner by the way.

did you tear off the mounting tabs? What kind of damage to the bumper?

Mk4 right?? If the bumper came all the way off and not just the bottom pulled out and the area around the lights/grill was left on you might want (need) a new bumper skin. If just the lower half came off it should be just a matter of removing it the rest of the way to fit it back on correctly.

It pretty much came off completely.

The passenger side of it is still clipped on but the front and driver's side are off completely. I stuck it back on and it stays but there's nothing stopping me from just pulling it right off again. It needs to be clipped back on but im not sure if that's all it needs. Plus, the wiring to the driver's side blinker, (the one thats on the bumper) is jacked up too. Theres an orange and a blue wire and the blue one got cut so that blinker doesn't work anymore.

Im going to take it to Burdick VW tomorrow morning if no one can help me out because I need to get it fixed ASAP.

Ill check back here again tomorrow night. Again, any help is greatly appreciated and I will compensate ;) I can drive to you as well if its within reason. I live in Phoenix, Ny.

sounds like you broke quite a few of the mounting tabs where the bumper bolts to the rebar etc. If you've ever wanted to do an R32 bumper, now is the time.

all that holds the bumper on is 3 torx screws located under the grill and a 4 smaller torx screws located in the wheel well, check all of those to see if anything broke or tore. other than that there is "tabs" that the bumper slides onto first to hold in it before putting in the torx guys

there are also the bolts that bolt to the bottom of the rebar located behind the right and left lower grills

there are 5 torx screws behind the grill between the headlights. and 2 torx screws (one per side) in the lower/smaller/outer grill openings. Not to mention the 4 small torx bits in the fender liners.

This is not looking promising.

If anyone knows of someone who owns a garage or something and could help me out, I would be forever in debt to them. Burdick VW gave me an estimate of about 1032 dollars today. Minus the 500 dollar deductable that leaves me with about 500 bucks unless I get a higher estimate from someone. (Trying Romano tomorrow) Im not opposed to paying a little more out of pocket but I probably wont be able to afford more than like 200 dollars or so.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated. I also wouldn't be opposed to just buying the parts and having someone else do it if they'd be willing. I dont know if the bumper cover and stuff would need to be painted though .. kinda in the dark on that ..

But again, if someone would be willing to do it, I would throw them cash of course. Let me know guys. I will post tomorrow after I go to Romano and maybe one or 2 other places.

This is what Burdick quoted me at minus labor costs and tax:

Bumper Cover 354.35
Molding 83.80
Air Grille Outer 11.20
Fender Liner 24.27
Release Rod 5.58
Hardware 25.00
Splash Shield Side 15.75

Along with the bumper coming off my hood latch was broken and I cant get my hood open right now. The guy that did the estimate didnt really look at it that closely and im 99% sure its going to need more than just a new "release rod." I failed to mention that this was an '02 GTI. Sorry about that.

OK, here is what I would do:

1) Get insrance co to pay you via your esitmates less your deductable

2) Post a wanted to buy on Vortex for a used bumper in your cars' color (which is???). Folks are modding thier GTIs all the time and you can probably find somone else with the same color car who is putting a different bumper on the car. Buy said item and ship it or pick it up.

3) Hit up a Salvage yard (Peirces... though the generally have slim pickins when it comes to MKIVs - in fact I can recall someone on Fasdubs here trying to sell a used Golf bumper) or hunt Ebay and get all those other items you need

4) Put it on yourself... If all that is busted is the hood release rod, all the other items will bolt on very easily. The key here is that all the mounted tabs/spots are all intact (including the brackets on the side of the car that the bumper slides into).

Withg a little luck, you may come out of it only down a few bucks.

Without posting up some pics... its hard for anyone lese here to tell how bad or good it is... so try to get some pics of it posted.

Just my 2 cents... YMMV
