So while my passat is down with starter issues. (Kyle- I think your on to something with the ignition switch) I have been driving my 89 golf. Never had a start problem till now. Upon leaving work I go to start my car and No cranking from the starter what-so-ever. I hear the fuel pump prime and operate as I push the key forward. I dont even hear a click at the the starter. I have 12.5 volts at my battery, La cucaracha sound plays. Now Before I go through the nightmare of changing the starter on an automatic MK2 (its under the exhaust manifold covered in a heatshield)
I was wondering if its an ignition switch would the fuel pump still prime?

How do I jump the starter using a wire? I was thinking I'd unplug the ignition switch wire on the starter solonoid and attach a wire that leads to the positive battery terminal. This sound right?

You got me there... not sure how to check for a bad ignition switch. From what I've read, people seem to have various weird issues that are caused by the switch. In my case, I was doing 70 down the highway and everything except the radio and lights cut out. I could get the car to crank and start, but I had to hold the key in between the "on" and "start" positions. From my experience, I think it's possible for accessories (and maybe the fuel pump) to work even though the ignition switch is bad. Other people have had weird shut-offs and sporadic starting issues. I'm not sure how to by-pass the switch at the starter. Maybe somebody else will chime in.
