The idea is to have a reliable, fun to drive, and semi-fast lumber getter.

I'm going to continue to build up the turbo diesel engine from the parts I've accumulated to put into the caddy. Should be a fun car to run, I'm going to take a couple pages out of Joe's TDI build up and mostly follow the road map that people have already followed. Swaintech Coated pistons, APR Bolts, Injection Pump Upgrade. I’d like to make this something that can handle bio-diesel that I would make from something like the appleseed biodiesel reactor ( http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/appleseedprocessor/)

The caddy has some body work that needs to be taken care of, and I'm going to check with Luke or Adam to see how hard that will be. While Overall the body's in pretty good shape for the year of it, and the fact that it's lived in upstate ny for the past 10 years or so. I also have a bead on at least 2 more caddys that I may pickup for this project instead. Anyway, a couple ideas of where I think I may go with it.

Set in stone thoughts:
Lifted Caddy: I'm thinking 2-3" lift there are various ways to get to where I want to be, haven’t figured out logistically what the best way to go about it yet. But, what is the sense of having a truck if you can’t go off roadin every once in a while (in my case, take it onto a nice grass field or nice country path would be about as far as it’ll go…)

Tannaeu cover: After my drive home w/Cate in the rainstorm, I found that the cabin gets a tad cramped with all the things that ended up coming home with us. A Tannaeu cover would make things a tad easier to keep dry. Or maybe even something like This ( http://www.pickupspecialties.com/rollnlock.html)

Side Stack Exhaust I was thinking about running a side stack exhausts (not sure of the feasibility of this, but it'd be kinda cool (or I think it would be cool…)

Anyway that’s the initial project thoughts, at the moment it’s on the road and the polly mounts in it make the thing vibrate like a tincan, I’m thinking about replacing them when I do the turbo diesel with regular diesel engine mounts (the rest of the poly mounts can stay)

What do you think?

So, Spent last night troubleshooting why I had no interior lights, traced the issue to the head light switch, the part that dims was corroded and not making contact. I cleaned it with some sand paper and we’re now good to go!
I attempted to fix the fuel gauge issue (where it shows I have no gas) Traced the line that comes off of the fuel sender and found a crappy splice. I cut out a splice w/no solder and re-soldered in a better connection, put liquid tape on the joints and then heat shrunk tubing around the area of the splice. Unfortunately there was no joy from the fix.
So, it looks like it’s going to involve dropping the gastank to look for corrosion in the wiring and fix the fuel leak when I fill the tank to full tank. Since both tasks require I drop the gas tank I’ll just wait a bit spray down the bolts with pb-blaster and drive around a bit.

But I’m glad I now have interior lights (I fixed the dome light too!)

I haven’t found much in the way of information on how to go about dropping a caddy gas tank, anyone run across any information that may be worth looking into?

Unfortunately I can't help w/ the gas tank problem. I do like your plans though! The tannaeu cover is a good idea. I have one for my truck and it's handy. I have an aluminum frame with a soft tannnaeu attached. It lifts up w/ struts and is handy... but it can get in the way! I've been unable to fit things under it and had to dissassemble the tannaeu from the frame... big pain. I really like the roll-up cover you linked!! Do that! You can easily roll it up if you need the bed space. Keep up the good work!

So I had it up on jackstands trying to figure out what I needed to do to get the leaky gas tank fixed as well as the fuel sender and found a loose hose clamp (which I think fixed the leaky gas tank but I'm not 100% sure. I was to chicken to fill it so it would leak all over if it wasn't...) The tank needs to be dropped to fix the fuel sender and I found a small hole in the exhaust. I also replaced an old rotted out exhaust hanger (not that the exhaust moves that much anyway.)

I thought it looked pretty good up on the stands so I took some shots.

Here's a question for you. The liner in the bed and I've never seen any other like it, have you? I don't see any other marks on it other then 'duraliner'

-Todd

lotar_6
06-27-2006, 05:37 PM
So what's your question about the liner? I've heard of it b4. Here's the parent company: http://www.durakon.com/go.aspx

Personally, I'd never put a drop-in liner in a truck I own. It traps water beneath it and it'll evenually rust. I like the spary on liner I have. Unfortunately it was on the truck when I bought it, so I can't tell you the brand. Just keep an eye out for rust in the bed. It might even be worth pulling it to get a good look for peace of mind.

FusLit
06-27-2006, 07:09 PM
Yeah, I planned on pulling it at some point to see if there was any rust and if there wasn't keeping it in. OR looking into a spray on bed liner 'rhino liner?' I think is one that I've heard of. From what I see underneath the bed is in fairly good shape, but the rocker panels are in need of some repair.

Long post but hah well, it's my almost 6 month update.

The Caddy has been put on the back burner because of parts, believe it or not almost anything past the cab -> end of truck bed are a PITA to get.

The Truck starts right up, but stalls out when you hit the gas when cold. I think I've traced the problem to either
1)a control pressure regulator (or Warm up regulator for those who know it by that name)
2)Something else... not sure, its been 6 months since I've worked on it x-)

I sourced one for it, but gotta pay for it and pick it up. Thanks ... Damn I forget the dude's name off the top of my head... PM me so I can get that figured out :icon_happy:

It was making a weird clinking noise when I went over small bumps at slow speed, I was able to figure out that the one of the dead springs was cut (or broken) spring on the front shocks, but left in the shock... made some interesting noises. The cv joint is making some noise, I haven't pulled it but I would like to re-pack it and hopefully take care of the issue.

A major road block was hit when I filled it full of gas the first time :-x there is a seam around the tank which (as far as I could tell) is leaking around. Discouraging was the fact that at the time there were no gas tanks to be found. Faroutparts.com had one on their web page but none in stock.

I shelved the Turbo Diesel project in favor for Joe's (RabbitGTDguy) 4 door GTD project that has some rust issues, at least the parts are available to fix.
http://fuslit.org/photo_gallery/picKLE-cache/misc/car/turbo_diesel_buildup/12-02-06_moving_the_rabbit/SP_A0223_640.jpg

I've been keeping my eye out for a tank (any tank) and saw one on ebay a few times that in the description said 'leaks, would need to be repaired) well my tank leaks and I would rather just pull that to see if I could fix it if I'm gonna buy a tank that leaks. About the beginning of this month I checked Faroutparts and they had new tanks back in stock!!! But @ $281 shipped to my door :icon_cry:

Well, I've also been keeping my eye on ebay and found one that said

DIESEL TANK OUT OF A 82 PICK UP THAT DID NOT LEAK IN THE TRUCK IT APPEARED TO BE IN GOOD SHAP WITH VERY LITTLE RUST,,

Starting bid of $39.99, I figured what the hell and sent the owner of the tank an e-mail asking what shipping would be to my door. $25 was the reply!

There were no bids on this but I had to wait 3 days until the end of the auction (Which just happened to fall on my birthday) so I added it to my watch list and crossed my fingers. These tanks by the way are rare or expensive from what I'd seen.

Last night I am happy to say I managed to snag this tank for a low price of $39.99 :icon_woohoo:

http://fuslit.org/photo_gallery/picKLE-cache/misc/car/caddy/12-12-06_tank/fb5c_1_640.JPG

Happy Birthday to me!!!

I plan on trying out one of the gas tank refurbish kits offered by por15 (at least I think that's who I read makes one) which basically coats the inside of the tank as well as the outside, I've read good things about it and was going to try it on my current tank but since it runs have been too lazy to pull the tank and have it just become a lawn fixture *grin*

That's the update kids, more to come once I get this thing.

Can I run two projects at the same time, not sure most likely not... But I'm excited to have a part that will allow me to fix the two nagging things that have been keeping me from actually driving this thing.

Fuel tank fuel level is not working because the “level sender” (don't remember the name) isn't sending the read because the connections are corroded (I'm guessing...) and the fuel tank leaks...

The are other issues with it:
Two of wheels are held on by three lugs, the problem stripped or broken lugnut.
muffler has hole in it... you can't really tell when it's running perhaps I'll just staight pipe it
rockers have rust
rear shocks need to be replaced
CPR (or WUR) needs to be replaced

Happy Holidays kids

So, my gamble on the tank appears to have paid off, the tank appears to be in good shape, I'll be using por15's tank restoration kit on it, just to be sure.

So, 2 months later I get off my rear and drop the old tank. I managed to snap a bolt that was super rusted and wouldn't come off, and since it was sitting next to the spot in the tank that was leaking heat was out of the question (at least for me.)

I have a couple options I could do I suppose, get someone with a welder to come weld a stud on or come up with a better hanger bolt system, I think I could drill the body where the stud was welded and put in a stainless bolt.

I haven't bought the por-15 kit yet, perhaps I'll order it this week, but the old tank had a few pinhole leaks in the top of it. I'll take some pictures of it once I manage to snag the camera back from the wife.

I started spraying the replacement tank with some 'rust converter' spray which should (in theory) help protect the outside of it. (since I've never used the por15 stuff before I'm not sure if it only does the inside) Anyway I'll post some pics of everything once I get the camera back.

AHha, so two months later (which is like 15 minutes todd time... my wife will agree with me) Anyway I've made progress...

http://fuslit.org/photo_gallery/picKLE-cache/misc/car/caddy/05-06-07_caddy-gas-tank/IMG_8722_640.JPG

I did find a pinhole leak in the used tank I got, so I suppose it's a good thing I did the tank treatment on it.

The por15 of the tank stretched over the past 2 days (it takes awhile, there's a lot of steps, which need to be done) and no I didn't get any during pics ....

the hair dryer's there to help cure the tank.

http://fuslit.org/photo_gallery/picKLE-cache/misc/car/caddy/05-06-07_caddy-gas-tank/IMG_8728_640.JPG
Took the tail gate off and I'm removing the rust that was on the handle causing it not to work with electrolysis
http://fuslit.org/photo_gallery/picKLE-cache/misc/car/caddy/05-06-07_tailgate_handle_electrolisis/IMG_8723_640.JPG

On a scale of one to awesome, it works pretty damn awesome.

Gotta pickup a bolt to weld back on the truck with the help of my friend mr welder here.

todd for futur refrence if you ever have a fuel tank issue with that pin hole I can get the fuel tank stuff from work and it will never leak again. well as long as you can keep the car under 9.5 on the g force scale

Awesome!!! I've got the other tank, I was going to keep it because it's not in 'that' bad of shape... how much would it cost me to get some of that sealent?

For what it's worth, the por15 stuff has hardened up quite a bit, when I checked on it this morning it already had quite a nice 'shell' built up. They recommend you let it cure for 72-96 hrs (which shouldn't be a problem as I'm no where near ready to put it back in...)

As for plans for the truck, at moment I'm gonna get some rear shocks for it and get it ready to pass inspection. I'm still thinking a lifted caddy would be pretty cool, get some big lugged tires for it weld up some brush guards

I'll be picking up my other turbo diesel motor soon, and depending on my buddy Joe's schedule might have to use the truck to do so. I'd like to get some more comfortable seats for it (well seats that give me a little more room) so once it's back on the road I'll start looking for some corrado or recarro seats.

Also, It appears to have sprung an oil leak on the rear pass side of the engine marking it's territory so to seak... I'll have to check into what that is, I suppose should do that while it's up on Jack Stands. Perhaps I should slam that turbo diesel back into the caddy to take care of the oil leak problem ... nah, I've slated that motor for the GTD

Anyway, that's pretty much the story with it.

I've got some rust issues, so I think I'll start collecting patch panels and a couple new doors. Which will mean a re-paint job in the future. What color should I go with? I like green... but am open to thoughts (2 tone, camo?)

Ok, so tonight I picked some rear shocks that supposedly fit http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3034490 (*from a 94 dodge caravan) a couple bolts to weld and a small vise to hold crap. I was able to put some heat to the stud and get the strap loose... wish I could have done that right in the begining, but with it being right next to a tank of gas that was leaking... I thought it probably wasn't the best idea.

Speaking of the tank, it's hardening up quite well, should be good to go tomorrow.

Anyway, I've loosened up the bottom two bolts holding the struts in but need to get the top's loosened (which are rusted and in an awkward place to get to) so my options are 1) grind 2) heat w/a propane torch and try not to start the undercoating on fire... 3) BFH

I'm gonna try grinding, but not tonight, don't feel like getting rust/dust/sparks/metal in my eyes when I'm tired.

Another reason I didn't weld the bolt on for the one strap that broke.

Speaking of straps, one of the straps needs some re-enforcement. I'm debating re-doing both straps to try a different thickness metal. Since I'm going to need to get some extra bolts to replace the one's I'm grinding off, I'll pony up some dough to get a couple pieces of metal for the straps.

Starting to think about what replacement panels I might order for the GTD and caddy since I'm doing body work... Haven't gotten the list together, but I think I'll be dropping some $ on some steel.

and thats the update

-Todd

FusLit

Apparently, I'm an idiot...

Long story, but I've got an 4th option... Hit the side of the bolt that is in threaded into a nut that's welded to the frame and pull off.

I figured that out after I ground down the head and dropped my propane torch head on the ground bending the pin that goes into the canister... so I got the trusty dremel cutoff tool out and went to town.

I managed to get once shock out last night. I need to get a replacement part for my torch and I made up some new gas tank straps with some steel I picked up that's a little thicker then the stuff originally there.

I did not get as far as I wanted last night... but there was some progress...

I think green is definitely the color. If you're going to go with the lifted suspension, I think you should do the stack exhaust and a remote intake snorkel too - like any serious old Land Rover with a Perkins diesel might have (or , say, a Unimog.)

Of course then you'd have to mount the spare tire on the hood...

Talk about a fiasco...

I've succeeded with my goal of getting the bolt out.

After I went to Ace to get the replacement part... which by the way they don't carry, but they replaced the torch because I had my receipt (of course not on me, but I was able to find it in under 10 minutes when I returned home. Thanks to Cate for that, she has an awesome cataloging system...)

Started trying to get the torch replaced @ 6pm after all the running around to get this thing replaced I started working on the bolt around 8pm yes, it took that long...

but I was successful in both endevors!!! New torch head, bolt out w/out stripping the nut.

This truck has been quite an experience But, I am happy to know that everything I do to it will (in theory) make it more reliable.

Cleaned the bed out and picked up a few things @ ace hardware to replace some things.

took it for a little drive down the driveway, I can't wait to drive this, it's gonna be so much fun!!! I've got a few things to fix though... the CIS fuel line stuff is kinda rusty and might be leaking (I'll have to keep an eye on it.)

I need to fix the leaky cis line, but apart from that the fuel gauge works, the truck starts and drives and I'm satisfied with my progress.

Answer: Tail gate latch

So, I went home this past weekend on Saturday for the maiden voyage w/the caddy to pickup a turbo diesel engine. (*side note* I call home to see how my mom is doing who just had a hysterectomy, and find out that she went into the emergency room Friday night @ 12 midnight, and my dad had gotten home @ 4am.. She's stable though so I give myself the go-ahead to go forward w/the maiden voyage.)

I pack my tools, a few bolts I see lying around (this is important later) my floor jack, jack stand, light, blanket, etc. and head out on the road. Fill up the tank, no leaks! Sweet! but have a CIS leak on the line from the distributer to the Warm up Regulator (WUR) It's a small, tiny tiny drip so I decided to run it and pickup a replacement line @ home where I know there's some CIS cars.

jump on the thruway and start driving, get up to speed, things seem to be going well (minus the drone of the thing... full poly mounts and no mid-resonator in the exhaust... gotta love it.) It's not that bad once you get it into 5th though.

After about 1hr of driving I hear a 'tink tink tink... tink ti-tink tink' and know exactly what it is, Gas Tank strap, I pull over and sure enough, ones unhooked and bouncing. (it's my crappy measuring skills I made it about 1/4" or so too long.) So I'm on the side of the thruway with the tank strap sitting there and I put it back in... theres about a 1/4" of play where I can push the tank up and unhook the strap... Oops. I look through the box'o tools and see the bolt/nut that I threw in just because. Put it across the strap and it takes up just the right amount of space! Sweet! I'm able to get to the next exit to take better stock of my car.

When I get out, there seems to be a drip from one of the hoses when I turn the truck to the left a clamp not totally tight? perhaps, but it's not to bad so I'll deal with it later. The bolt seems to be doing pretty decent, I say eff it and it'll be good to go until I get home to fix.

Head back on out and make it home w/out any more incidents.

Because my mom is stable in the hospital, but may have gone in from 'excitement/stress' related things, It was decided that I stay at home my sister is with her so she's not alone. The motor is only a 2hr drive from my parent's house so in the interest of having a 'reliable' truck, I borrow my sister-in-law's ford heavyduty 4x4 beast, fill the tank ($60bucks) and run up w/a friend, split it from the tranny, confirm that it does in fact turn over with a breaker bar and has a 4 puck clutch. I pay for the motor, load it up and come back home and transfered it to the caddy w/out incident.

My mom stayed in the hospital until Monday @ noon and I stuck around until yesterday afternoon to help out. Was gonna pickup a TDI block/head that I have back home, but was informed I needed to pickup 216lbs of butter (long story, not really that interesting) but I decided not to push it since I wasn't sure how much weight the truck would handle/how well it would ride.

I figure I had about 600lbs or so of weight.

Engine/tranny/turbo: 250-275lbs?
Butter: 216lbs
Tools, floor jack, other crap: 150-200lbs

Made it home w/out incident and was even able to stop at the tuesday night get together!

Overall, not a bad trip (minus the part about my mom being in the hospital :-/)

very cool, Todd! I'm glad you had a somewhat un-eventful trip! Did you end up getting a replacement for the leaky hose? Also, are you starting to drive it to work yet?

I have a replacement, but it looks to be in worse shape then the one in it, i'm toying with the idea of hitting a place that makes hydrolic lines and seeing what it would cost to have them fab something up. Ideally it would be fun to put the turbo diesel into it... we'll see.

Anyway, the line doesn't drip persay it 'seeps' for lack of a better term... you can see that it's wet, but it doesn't pour out ... If that makes sense.

Haven't started driving it to work yet, I didn't get the engine out of the back yet so I didn't mess with it this morning.

Glad to hear you got and didn't have too much trouble. I have blue center console you can have if you want to clash a little less, haha. Its dark blue but you can have it.

Thanks Ryan, I may take you up on that.

Got the engine out of my truck last night after mowing the lawn, and fixing my uncle's lawn mower...
Snapped a couple pics this morning and started going through the list of receipts that the guy has for it. I found an interesting one already anyone have an idea if it even sounds legit?

I think I'm gonna tear it down to the block/head and clean it up a bit before I do anything with it. I've also got a different turbo and oil pan to put on it.

I'm putting the receipts into a spreadsheet to see how much I actually got (out of idle curiosity.)
