Hi, I'm Rich and this is my 2003 Silverstone Grey GTI. I purchased the car new in June 2003. Yes, its my baby... it has taken me
some years of hard work to get to the position to afford a second car and in doing so I went back to my roots, the Volkswagen
GTI. I had purchased a new MK2 GTI in 1985 when I graduated college and landed a good job. I really loved the car, but I only
had it two years (sold it to get some extra funds to by my home). Since (as the locals well know) winters here in the Syracuse
New York area can be pretty harsh on cars (about 130 inches of snow average per season - lots of salt and sand on the roads),
my GTI is garaged and not driven during the winter. It's a 1.8T 5speed with leather interior, moon-roof, and 17" OE wheels (which
I used for long road trips and winter storage). For me, the 1.8T was the only engine choice because it brings me back to my first
GTI and the engineer in me loves the combination of power and efficiency that a turbo'd four cylinder engine offers.

Performance (handling more so than straight line acceleration) is important to me, so my preference is for a very OEM look with
subtle cosmetic enhancements that compliment the exterior and interior of the car while seriously upgrading the suspension to
make the car handle/drive/ride like a mix between a true sports car and a great grand tourer. I do like my car to look nice though
and I really like the 2002 GTI 337 (and especially its European 25th Anniversary Edition brother and various options/features
found in European spec GTIs), so I have incorporated some of those things I like from that car into my GTI. In fact, at a small car
show last year the judges form the MKIV OEM+ car class (very nice folk - but they were more familiar with MK3s than MK4s)
thought my GTI was a 337! We all had some good fun with this after the show with friends referring to my car as a 337+ (a mix
of OEM+ and 337 I guess), hence the reference to my car as the "338 Special Edition" (i.e. 337+1). :icon_bigsmile:

Exterior and Exterior mods

Spring of 2005 saw the addition of the VW Votex (20AE/337) body kit to the car as well as a nice new set of BBS RC wheels I picked up last fall
from a fellow Veedubber that took them off his new 04 GLi in order to put a set of 19's on! The 20AE front lip (lower valance) got pretty chipped
up last year from a couple of long road trips so I took the bumper off this spring and it re-painted and then clearbra'd it to protect it (something I
should have done last year!) I've learned mys lesson though... the 3M Xpel Clearbra product works really well at protecting the front of the car
from stone chips and bigs... I very highly recommend it! This winter I also picked up a set of OEM HIDs w/leveling switch... I need to get some new
pics of the car with these installed. They work really well! Exterior mods include:

- Expel 3m Clearbra on the bumper, lower front valance, lower hood, grill, and mirrors
- VW Europe "aero" wipers & blades front and rear VW Polo aero style wiper
- 35% window tint
- VW European blue tint side view mirrors
- Grill craft black lower grill kit
- Hummer H2 stubby antenna
- Clear corners
- FK wheel spacers: 15mm rear - 8mm front
- BBS RC 18" Wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD Tires (spring/summer/fall)
- OEM VW HIDs (manual leveling)
- VW Votex Body kit (i.e 20 Anniversary Edition GTI front valance, side-skirts, and rear spoiler)
- Painted OEM 4-motion rear valance (in order to retain the use of my 2.5" turbo back exhaust system and match Votex body kit)

In this pic from the 2006 opening day at Watkins Glenn racetrack you can see the OEM HIDs on the car and ready to light the way!

Here is the painted rear valence just after installation. Going this route instead of the Votex 20AE/337 rear valance allowed me to retain the use of
my 2.5" turbo-back exhaust system! :D

Interior and Interior mods

I really like the stock leather interior of my GTi, so all I have tried to do is enhance it a bit with some small touches here and there. Some of those
like the R series steering wheel are also great from a functional standpoint! This spring I have been busy installing some new interior mods...
lighted Jetta Dash Vents, Euroswtich, dimmer switch with leveling control for the HIDs, and a European OEM VW Delta 6 double din head unit
(which has some very neat text display and traffic program capabilities).

Interior mods include:

- Passat W8 overhead lighted moon-roof console
- Reiger Lighted shift knob with leather boot and chrome trim ring
- R line (R32) steering wheel
- VW GTi Monster Mats
- Lighted VW Jetta dash vents (fold flush when close)
- European VW dimmer switch with HID leveling control
- Euroswitch headlight switch w/DRL disabled
- OEM VW European Delta 6 Double DIN head unit
- AWE Tuning (Omori) boost gauge mounted in 42 draft designs steering column pod

Engine and Suspension Mods

I have put a fair amount of effort into improving the suspension and engine breathing of the car. The 1.8T, while a strong and
flexible motor as driven off the showroom floor, responds very well to improvements in intake and exhuast. With some basic mods,
the engine revs much free-er and has more power up top. Last fall (2005) saw the addtion of a Tyrol Sport upgraded side mount
intercooler and GIAC X+ performance ECU programming. I did experience fair amount of part throttle surging issues (mainly in 3rd
and 4th gear between 10 psi and max/peek boost) - with my dealers help we worked through some of it by settleing on a 4 bar
FPR and N75J boost controller valve, but the cure turned out to be the new version of GIAC X+ (14c) which came out this fall
(September 06). This new version of GIAC X+ made a huge improvement in the overall drivability of the car and reduced part throttle
sugring to a occasional small variation of boost that I wouldn't have noticed if I did not have a boost gauge. I highly reccomend my
GIAC dealer, Mike P and his crew at Tyrolsport... quality products and great service. One of the few people that I will let work on
my car! Last fall, I did a custom smoothed airbox mod which opened up the intake tract significantly while remaining very stealth in
appearance.

The full list of engine mods is as follows:
- GHL2.5" downpipe mated to a 2.5" eG Solid CB exhaust system
- Neuspeed lower intercooler pipe (replaces stock pancake pipe)
- Samco silicon boost hose kit
- Samco Turbo Inlet Pipe (TIP)
- ECS lightweight pulley set
- N75J Boost Control Valve
- Diesel Geek race short shifter
- New South Performance Power Gasket
- Audi TT225 coil pack wiring harness heat sheild
- Tyrolsport upgraded side mount intercooler
- GIAC X+ (14c) performance ECU programming
- AWE Tuning fender liner intercooler vent

A look under the hood of my GTI. Looks stock doesn't it? ;)

A quick and useful mod to protect your coil pack wiring harness is this heat shield from the Audi TT225 1.8T motor. The insultation
on the wires has been known to dry up and crack which can cuase shorts that results in mis-fires to make for a poor running 1.8T

After many hours of research, I have slowly been adding suspension mods to carefully evaluate what each change does to the handling
of the car. I have not done much this past year in regards to the suspension, but I have a substantial wish list of what I'd like to accomplish
in the next year or two (brake upgrades, Audi TT LCAs, H2Sport Sport Spindles, revised suspension, quicker ratio Audi TT steering rack etc...
its going to take some time to save the $$$ up to do all this!). This winter (2005/2006) I was able to get my hands on a Strut Tower Brace
from the MKIV based Audi S3. These braces were stadndard equipment on the S3 and properly fit Golfs and Jettas (were the Audi TT one
will not due to interference with the hood lift bracket). I had a extra tab (which bolts into something on the S3... not needed for installtion in
a Golf/Jetta/GTI) on the brace cut off and then had it painted Silverstone Grey to match the car's color. You can see it in the engine
compartment a few pics up the page. I have aslo just received a new Stress Brace which has just come out from Thomas Sport Tuning. It
should stiffen the structure of the car nicely as it mounts to multiple points just behind the back seat. I hope to have it installed this fall!

To date, the suspension mods on the car inlcude:
- Nuespeed Lower Front Tie Bar
- Neuspeed Front Strut Tower Brace
- Autotech Clubsport adjutable rear sway bar (current set on medium)
- Turn2 removable rear shock tower brace
- Koni Sport (Yellows) adjustable sport shocks
- Audi S3 (MKIV pltatfrom version available in Euope) Strut Tower Brace
- SPC Front Camber/Caster Set (set for max neg camber - around -1.2 degrees)
- Tyrolsport Caliper Stiffeners and Hawk HPS Pads (front brakes)
- BBS RC 18" wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD Tires

I have learned much about the capabilities of this set-up this year (2006), and so far it is working out really well. Ride quality is firm,
but not rough. After doing a couple AutoX events and some back road cruising, I like the grip and control the car has. The Neuspeed
Sofsport srpings are a bit progressive in rate though, so quick left/right right/left transitions can be a little twitchy until the spring
rates ramp up. Becuase of this I am thinking that when I do upgrade the suspensipon further I will be looking into springs (who
knows, maybe even a coil-over set-up) with a more linear rate/design. Having said that, the car is allot of fun to drive. Between the
springs, shocks, and especially the Goodyear F1 tires, the handling (grip) is great. The car is considerably more fun to drive than
stock with a fairly neutral and well balanced feel.

Future Plans/Dreams/Wishlist

- Audi TT/R32 or H2 Sport front spindles
- Audi TT/R32 cast control arms (feature slots to allow camber adjustment and beefier bushings)
- Audi TT (faster ratio) steering rack
- Stronger clutch/peloquin LSD/taller 5th gear when the stock clutch goes
- Brake upgrades (thinking maybe the OEM set-up from the VW GTI 337)
- Maybe a turbo upgrade.... nothing crazy though. Would like to keep things very OEM-like so probably a TT-225 KO4-02x type set-up.

Last but not least, the car's vanity plates (LTTL GTI) comes from a VW Rabbit GTI commercial from back in the early 80's (I can remember watching
this commercial on my college roomies small dim old Sony trinitron TV set with failing picture tube). This commercial showed a bunch of Rabbit GTI's
driving spiritedly around to the soundtrack of some german pop group singing in german a version of the old Ronnie and the Daytonas song,
Little GTO (with GTO changed to GTI of course).

I like your GTI a lot, Rich - you've definitely put a lot into the car!

Just for completeness, in your list of suspension components you don't have the springs listed (although you do name them later in a caption). I was wondering what made you choose the Softsports?

Thanks for the note about the post... I'll make sure to correct that.

I chose the softsports after (literally) months of reading and research. I wanted a spring with only a modest drop which would have minimum negative impact on suspension geomtry. The Sofsports are actually one of the few aftermarket springsets whose rates are higher than stock (for reducing body roll, squat and dive), but not insanely stiff. I also found that Neuspeed was one of the very few companies that actually published accurate springrates (specs) for thier spring so I had a good confidence level that I was going for a spring that would provide better handling than stock.
