I picked this car up Memorial day weekend. I have big plans for it, first the pics.

It's a 1995 VR6 GTI. Has approximately 130k on it. The body is in mint condition in the sense of no dents, the paint has been recently resprayed and has some serious orange peel.

I'm hoping to use a buffer on it sometime if I can, start in an inconspicuous area and work out as I build some confidence.

Mods in the works:

Transmission:
Right now I have some Redline MTL on order, hoping to get it soon. The car has some bad 2nd gear synchro, I'm hoping to calm it down a bit.

Eventually I'd like to replace the tranny, and while I'm in there the timing chains and head gasket.

Exterior:
Eventually I would like to:
I'd like to put a shorty antennae on at some point.
Smoked side markers
Smoked headlights or mkIV look head lights
New wheels, maybe some long beaches or monte carlos

Suspension:

I have a FK 60/40 kit ordered, hope to get it in soon. The current suspension is shot, springs are worn out. Also can't wait for a lowered car!

Engine:
I'm looking to get a chip sometime soon, maybe even this weekend, as well as eventually thinking about going with a supercharger.

Interieor:
Has:
Sexy saved by the bell edition heated cloth seats.
Momo shift knob and boot

Soon:
A new VR6 gauge cluster (on it's way!)
Rubber mats to protect the carpets, which are in good condition still

Eventually:
New seats

This is not a balls to the walls project, especially since I'm new to the scene I don't want to do anything crazy.

i'm thinking about taking this car down to superjam on sunday, getting ideas and asking others about what they think. I'm open to ideas, most everything is on hold till the fall since I don't get paid in the summer. (well not as much as during the school year)

Right now I'm trying to absorb as much info as I can from vortex and other members on here. Then I will set up eventual goals.

I have the GIAC chip in my 95 passat VR6. Very satisifed with it. Let me know if you get that chip soon, because I have a C2 42# fueling chip on the way and wont be needing my GIAC anymore.

I love red on MKIII's its my favorite color.

I also have the FK 60/40 kit on my passat and It made a night and day difference in both ride height and handling. And this is with a full size sedan!

I updated some of my goals and mod information. Trying to make it as readable as possible as I tend to ramble.

I'm taking this car this weekend to Superjam and hope to get some good ideas from people there, I'm going to show so I can get better parking and some ideas.

Drove the VR all the way too and from superjam. Got home put it in the garage on Sunday. Went to start her up on Tuesday and nothing.

Looking into the issue now to see if it's the battery or the starter. There was a nice grind of the starter not turning off, so I had a feeling it was going.

Cluster should come today. Suspension should be here by tomorrow or Friday. Now I have to figure out the starting issue and order the appropriate parts.

I bet its your ignition switch. Same thing happened to me after a trip to New Hampshire and back. Ran great there and back. Come to start it and nothing. Battery had 12.6 volts too. Just a click. I cleaned up my grounds and cleaned up the wires from the battery to the starter. This helped a lot and the car started more frequently. Changed the ignition switch $19 part at autozone and the problem is gone. The ignition switch seems to be a real problem for MKIII era cars

you can jump the starter with a screw driver or wrench, if it starts that way - but doenst start with the key then you know the ignition switch is the problem.

edit - sarah I wouldnt recoment trying this on your own, but if you do MAKE SURE THE CAR IS NOT IN GEAR!

I have a thing that hooks up to the starter terminal and to the battery and it has a button you push to start the car. Its meant for this kind of thing and I'd bet its a lot safer. I got it at harbor freight for next to nothing. Your more than welcome to borrow if you you want

Looks like I may be able to start piecing the car together . Suspension should be here real soon. Cluster came although I think it might be a 2.0l one, I need to check out some more info. I think I'm going to try putting it in and checking. Passat ones may have been 140mph speedos.

Need to go buy some oil so I can do an oil change while it's on the lift for the suspension. Need to order my transmission fluid so I can get that changed out. Then it should be good for the summer, besides buffing it up.

Pete will probably swiss cheese her while she's at the garage too.

Also big thanks to Brent2 for the free starter, that will also be going in real soon.

I officially own a lowered car! A big THANK YOU goes out to Pete for all his help and hard work, especially since my car was not being very cooperative for him. The struts were completely blown and a lot of little pieces had seized. Pete used his magic and everything free and together for me.

It was the starter that had gone and Pete says it was a wire that was corroded, should be an easy fix and then maybe I can sell the old one on vortex once it's fixed up, or keep it as a spare. THANKS to Brent2 for the starter!

Pete also swiss-cheesed my air box.

I left around 11 so I could go home and go to bed and be to work today, I'm excited and anxious to have my car running and looking great. I'll go pick her up today and then take her in for an alignment and maybe even wash her today before the GTG. I took quite a few pics, and will post up sometime tonight or tomorrow.

As much as my family claims to not understand the whole car thing, my brother was looking in my car the other day when I was playing with the starter and he started asking all sorts of questions about it. I believe his exact comment was "there sure is a lot of extra room in that engine bay, you should definitely do something to fix that" and started talking about intakes and what not.

He's excited and wants to see the car done, and watch the transformation.

So now I need to do something about the engine. If this summer gig works out then I want a supercharger by christmas.

as long as the car goes straight when you let go of the wheel then you are fine. if it does pull one way or the other make sure its not the crown in the road.

the strut shafts protrude the same on both sides (from the strut tower), something I checked on purpose because that is a tell tale sign wether or not things were assembled correctly.

Minor setback with the GTI.

Went over a small bump and then began to hear a clunk when going slow or turning, coming from the passenger side front wheel.

Turns out the hat that sits on top of the springs on VRs is smaller than the ones used on 2.0l. When I hit the bump it knocked the hat right through and it was rattling around in the spring.

So now we need to order the larger 2.0l hat.

Right now, my stock spring is cut, and put back on so it can sit and wait for the part to come in.

Punkassjim is making right on the situation and I greatly appreciate what he's been able to do for me with this situation. Spring Hats should be here tomorrow hopefully and we can once again get the car up and running.

Another question, when I start my car, the starter stays engaged for an extra 2-3 seconds. I read on vortex about someone that was having the same issue. Someone on there said that it was their ignition switch. Is there any truth in this guess, if so that will be getting fixed soon as well.

Just located an SLC transmission which I will be ordering. Wish I had time to do that right now, but I have to call and I need to be out the door in 2 minutes. I'll call on Monday and have it shipped out. Now I need to start collecting all the pieces to do everything else that needs to be done while the transmission is out.

Clutch
Flywheel?
Head Gasket
Timing Chains

Finally an update.

This car has really started to take over my life. Many of you know that I do everything now, whether it's going to a show, or to some random gtg in Canada. Everytime I take the car somewhere it breaks. I still love the car, but she's ready to go to sleep for the winter so I can start working out all the bugs.

Currently:
The power windows only work from outside the car.
The passenger door only unlocks and locks from that handle.
Cruise doesn't work.
Hatch will not open.
Condensor is pushed in.
Bumper is messed up.
Exhaust rattle.
Same 2nd gear synchro.
Squealing brakes.
Wipers only work on highest setting.

Nov. 1st she goes up and I'll start getting her ready for paint, and start collecting the parts I need.

i'd say no. for one the ignition switch is very new (month old?) and the passenger handle issue should have nothing to do with the ignition switch nor should cruise control. (IMO) I'm pretty sure she door problem can be fixed with parts from my golf.

we'll get it on the lift soon and examine the other damage from hitting mr. racoon. the other issues are typical MK3 stuff, the car is 12 years old its to be some what expected...

With our golf, EVERY single wire in those had gotten brittle and snapped, and were kind of in there partying and making random connections.

wouldn't it have been easier for the tires to be removed before you took the center off??

useanimagination

after a lot of debating about whether to leave them on or take them off I decided to leave them on. It will give me a better surfact come time to polish them.

how so? would the tire not get in the way of fully getting the lip sanded down and coated? seems it would interfere creating a point of failure that is open to the elements right along that edge.

Been a while since i've seen this car...

Those rad supports are a c*** s*****. I've done 3 in 2 years (different cars).

When I went to dexicool, I just ran the flush for a week with the old radiator, and ran dexicool as soon at the new radiator went in.

Whats up w/ the bumpers... I think I read above that you're replacing them?

Don't lie Stewie. I hit a raccoon. Bumper is damaged so I want a new one instead of dealing with it, so I'm going for Euro bumpers.

nope, that was just a scuff. I hit a raccoon right after Fall Show and Go. Broke the bottom slats of the bumper and smashed in my condensor and radiator. Being low my car just plowed right over it...

Ok. so an update I guess.

I've been really struggling to get anything done. Time, money and health issues have all come into play. Not to mention that I'm not good with working on my car so I've been relying on other people to help me out.

I thought about taking a break, moving the car and aiming to get it done by mid summer. I didn't like this idea but it seemed to be the most plausible. I only have a couple more parts to source and buy and am going to aim to get it done by the end of May.

Here are some parts I just got.

why the new hatch?

The old hatch has a bad case of cancer all along the bottom edge, it's hard to see from the outside, but the second you open it it's huge. And it's right around that body sealer so it's too damn hard to fix.

I just noticed the deleted wiper too!
