so Vinny, you need a good bottom end?

Don't believe he has done a leak down/compression test yet.

Yeah havent tested it yet. I want to stay internal water pump because its cleaner, so the AEB you have won't work.
I was actually thinking my block bored to 83mm, AEG 2.0 crank, rods, 83mm JE Pistons....

You mean there's actually usable parts on a stock AEG 2.0?
If I had known, I would have kept my old one...

you know the AEG crank is cast right? the crank you need for a 2.0 is from the new 2L TFSI, that one is forged. plus the bigger throw of the crank in you stock bottom end will give you a worse stroke to rod ratio, shortening your power band and hurting your revvability. why not go with a tall block with longer rods to make up for this. The ABA and I believe the new 2L TFSI blocks should both work. and the rods are the same price as the 1.8T ones.

Trying to stay on budget, I dont think the 20v head agrees with the ABA block very well IIRC. There is a guy on vortex with the same setup I mentioned, and the same question was posed about the crank comp, and he said that is by far not the weakest link. I messaged him and he has no complaints about slower rotation. There are a few people using AEG bottom ends for their 20/20 motors too. I priced the FSI crank and its not cheap hehe. A new AEG crank is like 500 less. However, a bare 2.0t FSI block just sold for $150.

whats wrong with the ABA block and why doesn't it agree with the 20v head? we are gonna pull the pistons from a 30v 2.8L v6 which has 154mm rods and a 21mm wrist pin with a 82.5mm bore. if you on a budget why waste money boring a block when you could put it towards a forged crank. I would trust cast pistons a lot farther that a cast crank. You ever see the piston wear and ring wear on a 9A, 3A, or AEG from the sideloading in the bores? now imagine that wear accellerated from boost and revving the motor.

Boring the block really isnt a priority, just gathering info right now. As for the ABA block, how do the coolant/oil passages line up? I'm really inclined to stick with the AWP to keep my accessory/cooling system layout, which is why I don't want to use the AEB block.
I wonder what the specs are on older 2.0 20v eurospec blocks like Stu's??

on paper its an issue, in practice no one has ever had an issue (has been tested in mid 600whp range). Not to mention the FSI/TFSI crank is much more $$ and needs a different oil pump gear pressed on.
plus the bigger throw of the crank in you stock bottom end will give you a worse stroke to rod ratio, shortening your power band and hurting your revvability.
in practice I've not seen this to be a real issue

imagine how many more things you can clean up with an aba block, ABF alt bracket.
i have an idea with an aba block, 9a forged pistons, aba forged rods and a built 20v head.. as soon as i find a cheep head.
what do you use for the stroker motor on an ABA.. a tdi crank?

but the longer rods means more dwell time that the pistons are at TDC, and translates into more torque lower in the rpm band and a longer smoother curve.
I would love to have some custom pistons made so I could use a 1.8 crankshaft in an ABA bottom end. with some solid lifters and the right cams it would be a rev machine with S2000 stroke to rod ratio and make power past 8k. i have a guy who can knife-edge the crank even, and with a 83mm bore it would give a 1.9L bottom end and an almost square motor.

An ABA block with ABF alt bracket is no cleaner than what I have.. I have one serp belt running the crank, alt, and PS, and the internal water pump. Doesnt get much cleaner than that.
Yes, you use a TDI crank in an ABA stroker.
Jay, the type of setup I'm considering uses the same length rods as the regular 1.8t.. perhaps you meant longer stroke?

you need a 1z/ahu crank for an ABA stroker Rob, unless you want to machine the nose down and the oil pump drive gear off the ALH crank.
I'm talking about the taller block/ longer 159mm rods the ABA and 2LTFSI engines use with a 92.8mm crank.

Gotcha, and I should have specified the correct TDI crank

make power past 8k
The turbo you slap on that will do more to increase power above 8k than worrying about the stroke ratio.
