Hey guys,

I'm thinking of trading my 03 GTI for a 01 S4.......

Just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience, any thing to look for. It has 140K miles, but he says all the maintenance issues have been done. I've heard the twin turbos are finicky though.

Any insight, suggestions, "ohmygosh don't do it's" will be welcomed!

thanks!

maintenance is a biggie on these.. timing belt, oil changes, the usual B5 stuff. Is it chipped? The biggest issue with the turbos is heat because of how tight it is in the bay. If he has taken good care of it (oil changes, idle down time, etc) it should be alright. I think there is a bone stock one for sale up here for just under 10k. Hope it works out, B5 S4s are still one of my favorite cars.

It's lowered... beware of the front control arms. The uppers need to be properly pre-tensioned or it'll cause premature failure. When were they done? TB? Cats... they ain't cheap? motor mounts, trans & diff. fluid, trans mounts? The timing chain tensioner seals & vc gaskets can fail. the pcv system can get clogged on the long breather hose form the driver bank rear to the pass. bank front cover.

I love the B5 chasis and the 2.8 is solid. There's no room to work on the engines, so it's gotta come out for turbo work. Check for oil in the tubes. I've got the 2.8, but not any turbos. It's a solid car that wicked fun to drive. I'd go for it, but that's me...

Thanks Lotar......thats exactly what I needed!

this is what he says: "Recent Timing Belt Service,Cam Tensioner Seals,Valver Cover Gaskets,Aux.Water Pump,Battery,Rear Brakes,Rear Wheel Bearings"

So, I think it's safe to assume it has been taken care of well.

We'll see what happens!

I vote for the sexier car...since I see Golf's everyday, the S4 has my head nodding up and down...

I say DO IT! I have naughty thought of owning a B5 S4! As stated, maintance done will save you tons later (or sooner!). Listen for the turbos when you drive it, if they are loud, prolly gonna need some new ones. Was it serviced local? Maybe someone knows the history?

As far as "DONT DO IT!" . . . Dont do it, but post the asking price, phone number and location of the seller

FD needs more S4s!

Well guys, I'm gonna have to pass on this car.

He wasn't interested in my GTI as trade (didn't have leather :( ) and the GF won't let me buy it outright (says we need a "house" pfft)

Anyway, if anyone is interested the price is like 9k....although he wants a *leather* GTI ideally. PM me for the info if anyone is interested.

The S4 motor is a 2.7 FWIW.

As stated turbo maintenance is a biatch, gotta drop the motor from the car to do the work.
