View Full Version : GLI problems
So yesterday i was racing a 68 Chevelle south on 81 and my car felt a bit sluggish. When i got home i parked it and went inside. This morning i get in my car and go to work and there was something wrong in the steering.
It felt almost tight at times and when i got on the highway the problem got worse. I went to switch lanes and my ass end dragged and the traction light came on, so i slowed it to about 20 then pulled over.
My rear tire was bulging on the outside. I went to grab the rim and it was very hot. Since the tire was already trashed and it still had about 10PSi, i drove to work.
Needless to say, the caliper locked up and heated the wheel so bad that the inside of the tire nearly melted. I got a new tire for $100 (Fuzion ZRi, what was on the car) and DUNN installed it for me for free. But now i am thinking i need a new caliper.
I DID NOT DRIVE THE CAR AND I TOOK THE TACO HOME. Tomorrow i plan on going out to my store and putting it on the lift before we open. I am hoping that the caliper is not completely seized. If so, i am screwed and will have to replace the caliper. GETTING UP EARLY TO DO WORK = NO SAT. JAGER BOMBS, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
is this the car that your bought from mike??
that really sux dude, im sorry to hear that..... but you can spend time with your daughter instead of having some jagerbombs

wow that sux man! if it got that hot, you'd better replace the rotor and wb while you are at it.
on my last rado many many moons ago, i used the wrong grease on my wb's and they heated up and poped the bearing caps off and lost all lubrication. I lost both sides let go on the highway while go'n at a pretty good clip. The rear instantly became uncontrollable and I was lucky I didn't loose a wheel. Had to replace the spindles, wb's, rotors, pads, but luckily the calipers were ok. This all happened on the way back from indy to ithaca, and we were just past columbus. Learned my lesson well.

that sucks man :-/
I've had a similar thing happen with mine, rear wheel bearing failed w/out warning. Luckily you are ok, it could have been bad.

so here is what everyone said i should be replacing:
Tire (done)
Caliper
Brake line from caliper to steel line i was told that the inner part may be pinched when i replaced the brakes, and could have been the culprit, but no way to tell.
Wheel Bearing (that sucks)
E-Brake Hardware (also could have been the culprit and the ebrake barely holds as it is)
the pads and rotors have less than 1000 miles on them so they will not be replaced as i dont have the money.
<this sucks>

Stu may have a caliper around, I don't know if the VR rears are different than the 1.8t/TDI/2.0 ones

Check the bearings out if there is no sign of heat damage..cooked grease, etc. Don't bother replacing them unless they are damaged.

All MK4s use the same rear calipers. And Vin is correct, I've got a set you can have for cheap.
GOT THE GLi to the DubSpot and pulled everything apart,
The caplier pressed in with some force but not much. And it went all the way down.
wheel bearing was good.
I checked the sliders and they were good.
The only thing that i noticed was that the brake hardware was not lubricated anymore, so i wire brushed everything and put some BrakeLife lubricant on it all and put it back together.
I also checked the pads and there was no abnormal or uneven wear. I guess i am just gonna drive it and check the wheel to see if its heating up abnormally.
SO RIGHT NOW I AM JUST THINKING THAT MY TIRE WENT LOW AND THATS IT. Well see.
Thanks everyone.
ya! everything seeems fine now

nice.
clean your wheels really well, if the caliper is bad you should see excessive dust on the wheel
