ok so me and this kid from new hampshire are starting to work out a trade for his car plus cash for mine. we've agreed on a price and all that stuff. but before i completely commit to this i need to know exactly how to do it.
has anyone ever done a trade like this? and if so how did you do it? especially since i wont be able to register the car until i have the title.

Then I'd just assume you need to sign the titles over and if you wanna keep your plates take the plates to the DMV with the title and the car is yours.
What you getting?

And a bill of sale....make sure you see his drivers license also to ensure the person signing is the person on the title. That way you have his real adress too in case something goes wrong at the DMV later.

You can get a transportation plate in NY but you need the title first. You could get him to meet you at a DMV office in NY somewhere. That way you can do the deal walk in and register it. You might be able to get a temp transport plate in NH too but I don't know that states rules on this.

yeah i was thinking about meeting him in albany which is pretty close to halfway that way i could try to get it all done at th edmv then. but then i remebered that the only time i can get off to do this would be on the weekend which means theyd be closed.

I think it would be cool if you already have plates for the car that you are trading and swap them out and drive back, the DMV might even be able to give you some easy solutions to what you could do. I know people who have done it in PA and just had the ins. card for the new car and the old reg. from old car and they did get pulled over and the officer was cool about it because he had proof of ins. and the old car was reg. properly and the new car had NY state inspection. Or you can find someone with dealer plates!

ok yeah but in order to have plates for the new car i need to be able to register it. you cant register a car in nys without the title. and if you can find someone who will just let you borrow their dealer plates ill give you 50 bucks

You could do the trade on a Sunday park the car somewhere and go back register it on Monday and then drive it home legally.
Or offer the dude $100 to deliver it to your house.. I've had 3 or 4 cars delivered to my house like this.

Dont you have plates on the car now, if the car U have has NY plates then u can transfer them to the new car. I'm just saying that if you have the ins. card and the title in hand and car is inspected. There should not be a huge problem to drive the car home with the old plates and not the current reg. for the new car. Or just pay the person an extra $100 for delivery...it is about how much it would cost for fuel and food!

if i was able to just drive a car with different plates on it legally then i wouldnt be asking these questions in the first place

when i traded my rabbit for my golf in PA we just went to a PA DMV and i paid 20 bucks for temp plates and drove home with the title and then registered it when i got back, as long as you insure the car its fine
or the 2 of you can just trade cars and titles and use each others plates untill you get home then mail them to each other (but youll be plate-less for a day or so)
but i would just insure the new car, meet him in albany and put your jetta plates on it and drive i home,

Go to NH's DMV website to see if they have temp plates.
