sitting in my car waiting for a tow truck, driving down bridge street something under the hood was clunking when I hit the gas, finally one loud bang, then will not drive in gear. I was able to coast to a back road.

bummer dude. was there any vibrations or other feelings or noises prior to the boom? I'm betting something w/ a drive axle or tranny.

If I push the clutch in and rev it, you hear something clunking around. I'm thinking axle/tranny as well

hopefully it's something simple to fix... have you been dumping the clutch at all?
Honestly, I think the dealer's gonna realize you have **** going on the RS's are not gonna what gives it away. (unless you don't want them scratched, then that's understandable)
Take it to Franklin's body shop ?

It sounds like when my car blew a CV, it clunked even when in neutral and the engine when the engine revving

06-04-2008, 10:55 AM
hopefully it's just an axle or a CV joint. I doubt it's the tranny. You'll be back on the road in no time. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!

my money is on an inner cv... blew 3 last year... sounds like the prob. easy fix... start hunting for an entire axle... easier imo. find it local and you can still get to michigan!
Master_Shake
06-04-2008, 11:44 AM
i can prolly still get to go to michigan but i don't wanna spend all my money on fixing the car then driving out there.
thanks to Ryan, got me to my dads house to get my mk4.

should be easy to tell if the issue is an axle when you do this. check for excessive movement in the CV housings.

Master_Shake
06-04-2008, 12:51 PM
If anything its due to the extreme angle of the axle.
im putting my money on the outer CV on the pass side from pulling those helpers out before notching your frame.
raise it or lower it, steelies or not, you have a hole cut out of your frame and the k frame is ground to sh!t. The dealer is gonna be uber anal about it.
dont think they will warranty it :frown:
but anyways, sounds like an easy fix. parts are gonna be the balls tho cuz its so new. Price to pay for being the lowest rabbit in the cuse. And you will have some good pics for your FL homos in WFSU!
good luck....

Did they hit you up with a ramp fee or anything like that for being low? They tried to pull that **** with me last year. F'n jerks

Nah tow guy was cool as ****. Gave him a tip, he was careful and used wood ramps to get it on the tow truck. He's the same guy that towed Rachels Mke to the Dubspot.
As far as I can tell its on the driverside, sounds more in the engine bay.
I took vacation days for Michigan just changed em around. Don't have to be back at work till Monday!

A> Once fixed are you setting it back up like you had it, but better?
B> Going higher so that it may not happen again
C> Going back to stock height?

BTW, if you want to replace the inner joint yourself, I have the bentley procedure in PDF form and I could send them to you.
LMK if you need part numbers & etc. VW should have reman'd versions of the OEM parts (noted by an X after the pn) so that could be cheaper. Raxles IIRC wants $250 for their MKV axles. A new joint from the dealership should be even cheaper.

If you want to replace just the inner joint.
1K0498103 - $203 @ 1stvwparts, list $306, $200 @ genuinevwaudiparts (just placed an order from them
1K0498103X- remanufactured- $135 1stvw, list $203, $132 @ genuinevwaudi
Note that the reman'd joints have a $100 core fee which will be refunded upon return of the damaged unit, so I'd factor in return shipping into the overall price.
Replacing the axle:
1K0407271BL- I'm assuming this is yours? anyways $426@1stvw, $419@ genuine, $641 retail
There is also . . .
1K0407271AT-$549 1stvw, $538 genuine, $736 retail
Only thing that was mentioned about the AT axle was "1K-7-100001>" ???
Reman'd
1K0407451CX- $279 1stvw, $286 genuine, $436 retail . . . $200 core.
I'd go for either the reman'd joint or the reman'd axle IMO. Both genuine and 1stvw are on the west coast so it'll take awhile by ground to arrive. If you are in a rush, i'd see what Rob could do for you on pricing or perhaps even GAP. What you may pay more for initially, you could get back by having reduced shipping charges (closer) for the core return.
For ALL of the above, you should buy a new axle stretch bolt. N91040601

Denotes what VIN numbers the PN is good for. Should have been a similar notation of "< 1K-7-xxxxxxx" in the listing too for a different part number.

Flyby posted up the whole procedure when he replaced either a boot or the whole joint. Basically you remove the axle, disassemble the bad joint and reassemble with the new parts.

It's not too hard to replace a cv joint. There should be a retaining circlip on the end of the axle and a tensioning washer on the other side. Pop the clip and pull everything out carefully and pay close attention to the order of the parts and how they remove. Clean everything excessively! You don't want stray bits of metal staying in the boot. Regrease, reassemble, and bolt it in.
Get the info from Dave... it should help. Again, it should be pretty straight forward. The hard part will probably be removing & re-installing any circlips.

Reman or new? Unless you're doing the reman, I'd do a full reman axle. Looking at the procedure, the inner CV is a lot more work than the outer CV (requires a press).
