ok I have never done a front or rear wheel earig except to tighten the outer nut.
I have a rear corrado wheel bearing new which I think is the same and I can use..
need to buy a front one..
anyone know how to do it, is it something I can do myself or do I need to just take it somewhere.
do I need special tools,
anyone wanna make a few bucks on the side...
do they sell the wheel bearings local anywhere...

The bearings are based off what ever hubs you are running. From what I remember you have stock hubs all around, so just order stock bearings. If you want to do it at the shop I can help, we have a press there. Also I think Jake is working on some rears either tonight or tomorrow if you want to stop down and check it out.

You have MK4 calipers, the hubs/rotors are most likely G60 or GTI stuff. I would order rear rado bearings.

I don't bother press the front bearings myself, usually. I pull the hub/spindle off the car and take it to Ed Karpinski, and have him do the bearing, and then I put it back together. It's been a while since I asked him to do one, I don't remember what he charged, but I remember it being reasonable.
Rear bearings are easy, they just take a little time.

If I had time to come up that way, i'd lend you my hubtamer to prevent the hub removal and consequent alignment costs... :frown: If you could make it down here, we could knock it out in no time.
just how bad is it?

well im in the same boat as you i just got a quote from vw $100 just for them to look at it which they would take that off if i had them do the work $475 for the labor $100 for each front bearing and $200 each hub if i need them too alot of money so thats why im lucky to have friends on here like pete thx again pete

Last time I did fronts for some one, I called around for price reference and I was quoted ~$350 a side for fronts (parts/labor w/ alignment). He bought the parts and I charged him $200 in labor for doing both fronts . I think he got the bearings for $40 a pop and had a lifetime alignment at firestone so he was able to save a decent amount. Depending how bad the bearing is you may need a new hub, I wuold recomend buying them (having them available if needed) and then returning them if not used. Rears are a lot easier IMO, I typically charge $50 a side. Are you doing new rotors too? Its even easier then... and the rears typically dont need new hubs unless you let them get tothe point where they are really bad (grinding or major humming).
PM me if you need help with it, I hate to see people pay soo much at a shop or the dealer :icon_mad:

the wheel shakes pretty good when I have it off the ground and at like 50mph, other speeds its ok, the rear isnt ad at all and might be ale to just be tightened and relubed... I dunno if I would trust driving it down there to be honest... im going to drive it to dub spot tonight to see if pete will look at it and tell me what he thinks....

PM me if you need the press; I have one also and it's easy once you do it once. I'd say it takes about 1.5 hours max per side. There was some speculation as to whether or not you need an impact gun to use the press, but I've been using it with a big wrench at my brother's house with lots of success. I'd be happy to do it for you for cheap ($20?) as long as you pay for the new bearing and circlip and it's a convenient time. I've always gotten my bearings from Autopart International as well as the circlips. I always replace the axle nut as well.

I talked to pete and he said I could do it down at the spot, i gotta buy parts and some beer =)
but he will tell me what to do so I can learn how. which I really would prefer....

Like that, but instead of for books, it makes good wheel bearings

Just out of curiosity, have you tried tightening the front axle nut? It's rare, but I've seen them come loose, and the loose nut makes it feel like the bearing is bad.

On Tues, When he had it up on the lift I suggested that very thing and they were checking that (I think) when I left.

Remember when we first used it? Took like 10 minutes to drive out the passat bearing with the IR 2135Ti . . . . then your bearing popped out in like 15 seconds . . . lol.
Hubtamer is the only way to do these things . . . a press usually damages the bearing and results in reduced longevity.

from p.o.
Rear wheel bearings shouldn't need to be replaced.... they were done when I did the rear disks and mayyyyyybe have 1000 miles on them. The fronts could probably use it because I just picked up the whole G60 front knuckles with brakes and all instead doing the wheel bearings on the 16v brakes that I previously had on there.
so do i still buy normal jetta wheel bearing???

you want 2.0L mk3 or Corrado G60 wheel bearings, should be the same as passat 16v or mk2 GLI bearings too, looks like late mk2 8v/16v are the same. get the full Kit for them with new axle huts and circlips.
You may want to do both fronts, once one goes it puts play into the other and starts deteriorating it, just a matter of time till it goes too.

UPS doesn't deliver on saturday unless you pay extra. Fedex on the other hand delivers saturday no charge if it is home delivery . . . . but because of that, they don't deliver on mondays.

I could swear I've received stuff from GAP on a Saturday before... I was going to suggest getting the kit from Autopart International if you want to do it today. They're open until 1:30, I think. When the bearing comes in from GAP, you can probably get rid of it fast. Someone always needs a wheel bearing...
