View Full Version : AEB head and secondary air?

Hey you 1.8T guys... I've heard that swapping over to an AEB head is popular due to the larger ports. But on this AEB head I got there is no hookup for the secondary air solenoid. So what do people normally do when they do this swap? Can secondary air be coded out on these cars (original engine was an ATW).
TIA!

hey pete this thread says some on how to delete it but you will have a CEL but there is ways around it.

You can drill out the SAI hole in the head or delete it from the car when installing an AEB head. You'll get a CEL as mentioned, but you can either use a 330ohm (pretty sure thats the one) resister or chip tuning (Unitronic) to ignore it.

damn wish I knew about drilling that hole before I installed the head :( that would of solved this issue.
the resistor will take care of the pump not being seen, but wont it still throw an 'incorrect flow detected' code?
thanks for the inputs y'all

resistor if its going to work should take care of the CEL all together.

not acccoring to:

but that is for a MK4. I know MK3's are the same way (they detect flow via O2 sensor) so I assume newer cars would be too.

The thread states the same thing I said in a different manor. "This will keep you from having a "pump missing" CEL, however you will still probably get the improper flow one." Probably is a bit strong worded...50/50 is likely better description of if the resisters are enough.

This did not work unfortunately, CEL comes on pretty quickly.
I talked the owner into getting a chip, is Unitronic guaranteed to get rid of secondairy air?

Yes, but you gotta ask for it IIRC.

I'm pretty sure Unitronic can get rid of the secondary air CEL, I just worked on a BT 20th and we tore out everything relating to that pump and emissions controls, it runs Uni software and hasn't throw codes b/c of it yet.

Are you planning on going with a BT application? If so, I would HIGHLY recommend Unitronic software. With there software you don't need to worry about using resistors. Using resistors either will not guarantee being CEL free.

He's just trying to get it to pass inspection. I doubt the actually owner of the car cares about going BT as much as getting it back, and having it be legal. Although, uni I've been hearing is the way to go.

I hear ya. I was just stating that it may not pass even with the resistor(s). The thread on Vortex is huge about this. I'm just going based of experience and readings. Some people have been successful without getting faults/CEL's without Uni.

True, it's hit or miss using the resistors.

From my experience resistors are not hit or miss, its 100% miss everytime. It may trick the ECU into thinking a pump is there, but it does nothing for the other benchmark:
The O2 sensors are used to detect a change in the exhaust gas makeup at the same time the pump turns on. If the ECU doesnt see this change then it throws a 'incorrect flow detected' code. From my experience there is no way to get around this.
As it currently stands the car needs a radiator fan to be driven, its insured and has plates but it will slowly over heat when driven (in the city at least). Once I get the fan in and put some miles on the car it will be getting a unitronic chip to code out secondary air.

Get to work on mine, I usually pay upfront...
BTW, I'll probably want this removed from mine down the road also...
