Did I miss something when they annouced this? I just read a review on the car and it weighs less than the GTI at 2800lbs. It also has an electronic damping system with three setting that affect suspension, steering and throttle response.
It sounds like it is everything the GTI is supposed to be but was forgoten when they designed that car. It is also priced lower or at the same price point as the GTI. It seems like an awesome car for the money and exactly what everyone has been asking for.
I hope they decide to bring it over here at some point regardless of what they call it. They could stop selling the GTI and just bring this over at a slightly lower price point and it would probably sell.

Its been out for a couple months now, the thing is we'll never see it over here, VWOA already stated that there would be not enough sales over here to yield selling them here... they already have the gti and the rabbit. Their prediction is that since sales are down to begin with on the mk5 gti/rabbit platform, that they won't be able to sell another car thats almost the exact same because a lot of people in the US couldn't tell the difference... Sadly... something else we get to miss out on... at least we got the Tiguan right guys?

I wished my MK5 looked like this...

I saw the car when they released the final design but some how missed the specs on it. Everyone was complaining about the horrible design and how it isn't really a Scirocco. When you read the specs it hits every aspect that the origional Scirocco had to its advantage over the GTI.
The Scirocco is made in Portugal alonside the Eos. I would think that it is a cheaper car to build than the GTI which has some sort of contract saying it has to be built in Germany. To me it would be more profitable for them to sell it here than the GTI and because the average person wouldn't know the difference so they could just substitute the Scirocco in.
Although the MK6 is coming out at the end of the year/beginning of next year in Europe. I wonder if they would just bump up the MK6 here sooner to have a more profitable hatchback.

Would be sweet if they did though

I loved my '80 Scirocco S and wish I still had it. VW is so incompetant when it comes to marketing in the US I don't see how the new Scirocco will ever make it to our shores. Perhaps as a limited model like the R32. One can only hope.

They could call it a Scirocco everywhere else, just for the US it would be our special version of the "GTI" since it looks similar:smile:
I think with the image VW is trying to get back to you might see both cars for sale at the same time. Thats how they sold them back in the day, so why not today? I doubt it will be soon, but maybe in a few years after they get thing on track.
The Jetta is selling extremely well for them as usual and reliability ratings are up. Maybe they will get back to their old ways of making some interesting cars even if they are low volume, sometimes you need brand image over sales.

I think the issue here is that even though they are cheaper to make them in Portugal, its still EU and the difference between the Euro and the US dollar is going to mean that there would be little or no profit in selling the car here.
I'm all for seeing the new rocco here in either in place of or sold right next to the GTI though. VW should bring certain models here as loss leaders as the image the car would set in the market place.

After seeing the vid...I'll take both! The thing that get's me is why the put in the TSi motor? I'm sorry but VW has pussyfooted around for too long. Why not just design and build around the 3.6L from the Passat? Why do we have to see baby steps? Don't want to step on the A3 big brother toes?
