Actually it a vacuum reservoir. It helps keep a constant vacuum pressure in the system.

Supplies vacumn to the brake booster incase the motor stalls/dies while you're moving :icon_tup:

My ball holder/vacuum thingy was strapped on the inside of the hood. Not sure if that was typical, but looked normal to me.
