This was cut & pasted from VW technician I know through the Rabbit Owners Club forum. Wonder if the price of diesel will turn off potential buyers? AND what will the price of gas be at that point anyways?

"So i'm at vw training in NJ at the moment. I'm training on the new technology, tiguan, sportwaggy, and new diesels. The first questoin I asked was, "Is the rabbit going to get a diesel?"
The reply was such, "Soon, EVERY vw is going to be diesel in the United States." Now it's jetta and jetta wagon. Later this year it's gonna be the tiguan TDI followed by Touareg 3.0v6 TDI, followed by the rest."

If they are able to bring the cars in at a price point that isn't more than what a gas car is, you get double the mileage 4.00 vrs 4.50 is not that much of a contest (in my opinion)

At the moment people think the diesel cars are made of gold and as such they are commanding much to high of a price (in a perfect world, hopefully in '09 when they can sell new ones there will be an influx of diesel cars and pricepoints will go down. In reality it most likely wont...)

As far as I have heard only the Jetta and Wagon version will have a TDI this summer, then the Touareg later this year. There has been nothing official on a TDI Tiguan which sucks but they chose to build it in a place where it isn't cost effective to put the TDI in it for the US. You might see a TDI Tiguan in a year atleast, probably a couple. The Rabbit most likely will not see a TDI until the next generation which might be sooner than expected because of the money they loose on the current model. They can't get a US plant open soon enough to lower their costs in the US market which is why the Jetta will be the only real option for a while since building them in Mexico is still affordable.

I did some rough calculating and as long as the gap between diesel and gas prices does not grow, a diesel getting 45mpg all the time will trump cost wise a gas car that gets 30mpg only on the highway.

On another note, I read somewhere that the new US plant is going to build a new sedan, specifically designed for the US market (kind of like what Honda does with the US accord). Not sure if his is a good thing or a bad thing. I would think this would effective replace the Passat or move it upmarket.

I was reading the other day that VW has over stated the MPG on the new TDI's. I guess the new EPA numbers put it at low 30's in the city which isn't bad and they also say there is a percentage for error so it would most likely be higher as seen by current TDI owners. It looks to have the potential for what VW claims but only time will tell.

It would be nice if they were to build a new polo size car here, but as usual VW will probably be late to the party.

I saw diesel at $4.95/gallon today. Soon it will be more expensive than bottled water!

I can't wait for the new VW diesels to come as they will certainly push down the value of used diesels.

Supposedly, Jacoby is eyeing or has already determined that VA is the place to set up a factory in USA. http://vwgazette.blogspot.com/
If I can only convice my wife that VW diesels don't smell anymore...
