I'm looking at a '97 A4 this weekend, and im wondering what known issues I should look for. I know timing belt is big (thats been done), and potential sludge issues (not sure how to inspect for that), but what else should I look for.
Plans for the car are to take care of any maintenance it needs, lower it, and upgrade the turbo/IC and exhaust if it needs it. Thats about it! Are there any reasons this year/generation wouldnt be good for that? I havent done much research as far as whats available for the AEB, but its my understanding that the earlier ones had goodies like big port head and forged internals.
Any known components that are likely to fail at 300HP? I'm leaning towards a T3 Super 60 for it.
Input is appreciated! Thanks.

Make sure the control arm recall was handled.. otherwise that is a good base for that kind of power.

Possible forged rods, but crank is cast. Sludge can be if really bad can be viewed by pulling the oil cap off the valve cover. They're not really much different than the rest of the 1.8ts. HP isn't the issue, its torque spikes which will kill rods. keep it under 325wtq and you should be ok.

Are there companies that offer BT software for these generations? Any recomendations? I want to do all the turbo/downpipe/exaust/IC on my own but I'm gonna need software to run it all.
Also who should I look at for an exhaust manifold? APR/ATP makes them I presume, but looking for options.
Thanks.

kinetic is coming out with some new T3 manifolds, take a look at them.
the most important thing about avoid sludge is running good synthetic oil, so asking the seller what kind of oil they ran in the car is a good loaded question. run away if its dino bones

Stay away from ATP... I know from experience. PagParts has some good ones too.

For the AEB there are basically two options, Tapp Tuning or Unitronic. Tapp offers much more in for larger injectors, though with a T3super60 either company should be fine. I know Tapp offers a flip switch on the ECU to change between pump and race maps too. Expect to pay 800-1000 for the tune BTW.

for the longitudinal cars 034Motorsport.com has the largest collection of parts, if you find something you want from the site I can hook you up with some guys who'll get you a discount on their parts.

Great info, thanks.
Whats the general consensus on eliminator kits? Should I steer clear, or are they a good option? FYI - T3S60 is not absolute, just something i've seen good numbers out of with out sacrificing too much low end. I got lots of research to do and am open to input.

If your looking for bolt on simplicity an eliminator is appealing....but in the end its really not that much more dollars for a better flowing standard T3 housing and appropriate exhaust manifold.
I'd certainly try BoostFactory....not sure they're doing much more than selling turbos any more.
