I've got a set of 4 old Boston Acoustic bookshelf speakers with rotted out woofers. Is it worth trying to repair then or should I just take them to the dump?
If I keep them is the repair something that a novice can do or do I have to take them to a repair shop? If so where?

If the foam/rubber surrounds are gone, fix em! They sell the surround kits on ebay and other places. I fixed a set of Bose series 1's that needed new surrounds and now they are fine!

Last I knew there was a guy on Taft Rd who did speaker repair. I want to say the name of the place was SpeakerWorks or something like that, but I haven't been there in a while.
I've done these repairs myself. You can get kits, the only trick is to make sure the coil is located properly when you glue the new piece in. If you're off, the speaker can bottom and sound awful.

Yes, I was hoping he would chime in considering his new license plate.

I think speakerworks is out of biz (not 100% sure on that but that is what I recall). Any company (like the one in Rochester I use - can't recall the name off the top of my head - will cost you around $40 to $50 to replace a surround on a driver - shipping costs eats of $150 to $20 of that), so if you can find a cheap kit and do it yourself, that would be best. Depends on the particular speaker (model, what it cost new, what its worth to you now) whehter that cost/time investment is worth in repairing it or not.

Looks fine... I'm no expert though on woofer surround repair kits though. Price is certainly resonable. Educated guess is that most if not all surround repair kits you get these day are probably sourced from China... should last several years if not longer depending on use.
