Ok I am looking for a new car and before I buy something I just have a couple questions about the tt looking at a 2001 blue 225 with under 50k coupe.

1. does the pass side air bag have a control to shut it off? important
2. what is the reliability/ are there alot of issues like the mk4 jetta's
3. handling and performance... how does it feel. compared to a mk4 1.8t
4 do they make a snowboard rack for it?? Important!!!
5. how is the awd on it in the snow? is it that big a diff.?
6. anyone know if the 225 is an acurate number of stock hp and what the stock tq is?

thats enough for now.....

1 more... I also saw a conv I liked... how good are the tops and are they easy to use.

The TT's "Quattro" is really VW's 4motion/Haldex, not as good as true Quattro found in the A4 and other Audis but still good.

Complete model info (I assume you are looking at a Coupe): http://www.audiworld.com/model/tt/01/coupe_specs.shtml

here is a pic of Audi's OE roof racks:

mmmm TT

I want one too! :-D

and a corrado, and a country golf... and a gia and... well many more cars which just make a long list and the wife antsy

What I need on the other hand.. well that's not as nice of a list to write out I suppose *grin*

The TT sounds sweet man, good luck!

i check these out on ebay all the time, I think they would make a great daily driver and they have really come down in price. Ive seen them as low as 13 grand for some of the less popular colors (like green). Currently there is a black one in NJ for 15G's buy it now. I can try and dig up the link if your interested.

I dont think you can disable the passenger airbag, but they do have rear seats if that helps.

The 225 is rated at 207TQ

USOPHUNKE

Oh.. I did not know they had a rear seat.... I will post a linc to the one I am thinking of getting... see what you guys think.

Their not entirely useful rear seats...but they are there...

Handling and performance wise these are much better than a stock MKIV Jetta/Golf/GTI.....

The car has....

- Better brakes
- Better spindles (better suspension geometry)
- LCAs that are slotted (allow camber adjustment and have
better bushings for better feel)
- Better steering rack (faster turns ratio)
- The car I think is also a bit lighter than the VW MKIV

and not to mention that it has one of these!
http://sigsound.com/vw_images/TurboMani/KO4_022_1.JPG

Its not a big turbo, but when chipped the KO4-02X you should get around 250hp out of the car.

Reliability wise... well it is a 1.8T. I would imagine the usual stuff can be problematic: Coil packs, window regulators, MAFs etc.. I would check some TT forums to be sure.

It gets a definite "DO IT!" from me!

yes there is a switch to shut the passenger side airbag off

i have a 180 quattro and it is great in the snow

225 is a great choice(will be my next TT)
some things that I know over my 180 about the 225
larger injectors, MAF
k04 turbo
6-speed
dual front mount intercoolers

you will want to change the timing belt before 60k
other problems might be bad MAF's, coil packs, guage cluster, as far as I know typical 1.8t problems

check out the mk1 TT section at audiworld.com and also check the FAQ section

Awsome you can shut the psairbag off... so much would rather have Bella next to me....

I am hunting, I have found a couple black coupes and an s4 that I am going to check out tonight a friend has here at work. I have time on my side so I am just going to look till I find the exact car I want..

tt will be blue or black...
s4 the same
or I am also thinking of buying a 3000gt vr4 that another friend has with 62k and mint.... its a 95 i think.... I have to drive to westmoreland to look at it though...and he doesnt know what he wants for it..but I said I wanted to spend like 13 and he said we could prob work something out...

blue tt so far is my first choice....then black.. then maybe this s4..which I also know little about...basicly an a4 hopped up on crank..I am told.. then the mitz depending on its condition... I will try to find time tonight to do some research on all these...

thanks for the info

boostin20v
02-15-2007, 05:25 PM
s4, assuming you mean the bi-turbo 2.7l v6 models. They are known for turbo failure as a result of the heat in the tight engine bay. which brings me to the vr4, is it a turbo model? because you might as well drop the motor to work on the turbo....

USOPHUNKE
02-15-2007, 06:50 PM
yeah all vr4's are turbo models and the turbo sits in the front just like dans gsx i think...its pretty much like turning a vw 16v around....... its actually a pretty solid design... as long as you take care of the chains they are good reliable engines and stock 300 hp is not too shabby. Like I said I will be doing research...I have 3 weeks ish....

USOPHUNKE
02-15-2007, 07:11 PM
I see what you mean on the vr4... its engine is tilted 45 degrees forward wapita...

Do all s4's have these issues... cuz its really nice!!! I love the interior...It has a broken headlamp from a stone. its cracked pretty bad.. but other than that it is clean. completly stock never seen winter/ never modded. I would have to sell my jetta first though... its hot I must say....

but still leaning towards the tt.... for now...dont want to replace two turbo's

boostin20v
02-15-2007, 08:54 PM
All S4s with the Bi-Turbo pretty much.....the newer B6 have the V8 which is freakin sweet.

CuseBora
02-15-2007, 08:56 PM
Ive been checking out b5 S4's for a while now, hoping to find the right one to jump on. From what i know about the turbo problem was the heat melting the oil lines to the turbo, but according to some of the folks on the Fourtitude forum the 2001 and 2002's are less known for the turbo failure. And yes they are very, very nice cars...

USOPHUNKE
02-15-2007, 09:10 PM
with the cost of turbo's its not really an option I wanna mess with.... I plan to get something and leave it stock other than chip and from what I am reading the tt sounds like it may be the car. I am also considering getting a rubicon black. I was really thinking scion till I drove to work and watched one pushing snow and I passed it like nothing in my crappy mk4 jetta with used tires... It is still not impossible, but I think I would need something 4wd too to get me snowboarding. Plus there was a tt at titus mtn and it looked fricken awsome sitting there among all the suv's. and trucks. Wish I had my camera.

well back to searching.....

USOPHUNKE
02-15-2007, 10:55 PM
ok after a bit of review...I am pretty much set on the tt or buying another jeep/rubicon.

I like the tt blue and black and grey... I like the jeep in black grey and the willys edition green.

my other thought is there any possible way to put a snowboard rack on a conv tt? I know I can on the jeep easy... I may go get one this week as my wipers stopped on the jetta today and when my blinker goes off it still makes the blinking noise... driving me f-n insane... mk4 suck big hairy nu-t-s!!!!!

jeep 6cly/ or tt 225 hp....pro's n cons..please

I love Rubricons, but they may be costly at the pump, The TT225 sounds like a solid bet and are really nice cars. Cant wait to see which vehicle you end up purchasing. The Jeep may not be very comfortable on longer commutes because of suspension harshness and road noise, but then again its a Jeep.

I would stay away from the VR4 for a daily. 3.0l twin turbo 6 speed, awd, all wheel steering (to a degree) Very heavy and expensive to fix. You have to take the intake manifold off to change the spark plugs, and , unless things have changed, if you break something in the tranny, it has to be sent back to Gertrag for repairs. They are a killer car if you have the money to keep up with them.

SO go with the TT or the Jeep

but why is it are all the fun cars expensive to fix/maintain?

limited availability of parts, complexity of the systems, cost of training techs to work on them etc etc

The TT has zero room in it. The backseat is big enough for small kids, the trunk is small too. It would be a great second car. It is pretty much a MK4 even though its got Audi badges so you know what issues it will have.

The Jeeps are nice, the 4D especially has alot of room. The 2D you know all about. Unless you plan on going 4wheeling alot the rubicon package isn't really needed. The main bene being the 4.1 low range and front Dana 44.
The base wrangler can be had with 4.10s and a rear locker which is pretty decent IMO. The engine/trans/rear axle is the same but its much cheaper.

Brent... get what you like.... both the Jeep and TT225 have thier merits and faults...

I'm not much of a truck/suv guy and would go for the TT (assuming that I would fit in it! ) I would put a set of H&R dunebuggy coil overs so you can raise the car up to plus above hieght for the winter (with some meaty studded snows!) to get through any snow and then dump in back down to stock height for summertime use!

For your use and future use in hauling around boards and gear... I wonder how much a used Audi All Road would go for (probably pretty pricey)... would certainly have plenty of room for skate boarding and snow boarding stuff and should be able to get you to any mountain in most snow conditions.

USOPHUNKE

I have always been a jeep guy having a few of them before I know all about them and how to work on them pretty well. I am not a big fan of the all road. I went and test drove an xb this morn at romano and I was actually surprised at how well it handled in the crapppy snow on the lamoyne hills. I asked the dealer to get me the towing capacity to see if I could tow a small trailer with it. Like a small uhaul. he is suppose to call me. The hard part is I love the look of the tt, esp the roadster..but it is very impracticle. But some times I think it would be nice to just be impracticle once and a while. I prob will settle for an xb if it can tow a trailor. Its hard to pass up a wwarranty, and 160 dollar car payment. I def. dont want mk4 problems....those cars should be sold with a warning!!! caution car will break on regular basis and dealer will screw you at everychance he can love VW.

Yes I suck at buying cars I know, it takes me forever and I always think I am getting the wronge one. What i need is 4 cars. 1 fast, 1 with storage, 1 cheap and one that is just hot as hell..... maybe I can find someone to trade my bike for an older jeep....

18 days till I have to decide....

1 more question...

I saw a fe r32 for around 18k-20k with 45k miles on them and they seemed pretty clean. awd more room than my jetta fast and hot and can tow a trailor. Is it a mk4 nightmare too? or is the 3.2l awd better???

I have 2500 to put down on one so that would make my payment acceptable....
This is another bad idea probley....... when does adam get home!!!! I need to go car shopping!!!

BUNNYLOVE

Good point you could just pick up an older Wrangler for cheap and then get a cooler newish sportier car for daily use. Then you have an alternate daily driver/backup.

18k-20k for an r32??? that is a bargin, a steal!

I see r32's still getting 25k-28k at dealers, if you can find one

I love those (or most any euro wagon!)... sounds real sweet!

BTW, fols are right about the 2.7T... when I was at Tyrolsport one time they had when there and the tech has in process of a major engine repair (bad timing chain install focked motor)... its a real tight package in there and a looked to be a major pita to work on.

I have no problem getting in and out of my tt (I'am 5'11" 180 lbs), storage isn't that bad, I have gotten my 4 stock wheels and tires in the car using the trunk and the cabin. 225 chipped on 93 octane program 263 hp 267 trq(APR), great car in the snow at stock ride height with snow tires. again there is a passenger side airbag switch(in the glovebox).

some random features:
xenons, headlight washers, heated seats, roll windows down and up with key(programmable with vag com to use remote), bose 6 disc changer, some have navigation, etc.....just trying to get a TT buddy in the area:wink:

Now me.....I've never tried fitting into a MK1 TT, don't think I could squeeze my 6'3" 300lb frame inside one. I have high hopes thoough that the new MKV based Mk2 TT would be fit-able for me as I hear its got a fair more amount of room in it than the MK1 TT. If they deliver the 280hp 2.0T TT-R version that the mags have been talking about, I would love to have one of those some day!

I am going to test drive an r32 not a roadster... I need a back seat due to having my daughter. So if I go tt it will be a coupe.... Its funny I can get a tt with 20k less miles and 5k cheaper. but there is just something about the r32 and the sound that makes me want to spend more... I know crazy. I also have an appointment to drive an evo this weekend, which I have driven before but cant quite remember what it was I didnt like. I know the interior was lacking, but I never really payed much attention to how much room they had. they also can be found now in the 20grand price range...

sti seem to still be a bit more??? wonder why??

I hope to drive each car I want before I decide.... then once I decide I am going to hunt for that specific car till I find what I want/exactly...

quattro411
02-21-2007, 01:24 AM
stock tt's dont have a very aggressive exhaust sound, you can get a chip and a cat-back exhaust and still save yourself 4k over the r32 if you can get that tt for 5k less. evo's are nice, def faster than a chipped 225 i think.

to be honest with you, i don't know what it is but i just love my tt. there's somethin about these cars that all the owners can't get enough of(as long as there aren't any major problems, knock on wood)

easy to tune
unique
awsome interior
head turner
great performance for the money
puts a smile on my face everyday

i will def be a tt owner for a long time, i plan on getting a 225 coupe next

USOPHUNKE

yeah its hard buying a new car.. esp when I want one car to do way to many things. but $$ is a factor... ow can you put a (sin) hitch on a tt?? I know its horrible to say but hell if ron has one on the corrado... He is def. going to burn before me.

I found a 03(edit 01) tt silver quattro coupe 225 with 32k for 14500.. looks to be mint and the carfax is clean... that is 8k cheaper than the 04 r32 I am looking at with 50k. I think for the 8 grand saved I can get a snowboard rack.

I bet you will see me in one here in the next month.... either the silver one I am going to check out, or a black one if I am lucky enough to find one I like....

Yooo just caught this topic...I will summarize my thoughts....

1. the scion in my opinion was actually pretty darned good in the snow...but I can see how in really deep snow the front end could plow.

2. gonna get in trouble for this one, I'd stay away from the audis. All the reason's you hate your mk4....they are made by the same company at approximately the same time they are likely to have similar quality issues. The TT's are definitely a nice looking car and the fact they they are an AWD soupe is hard to beat, but if you want to be happier with a car than you currently are I'd stay away.

3. car loan payments vary like crazy I use this handy calculator to find them.
http://www.bankrate.com/brm/popcalc2.asp

4. Stay the hell away from the 3000GT VR4 they are HUGE and although they are pretty fast and have AWD they will be painful to fix and a lot less fun to drive than you think....plus every time someone tries to make them faster...they end up slower.

5. Ok what are good options....For AWD and some room with good reliability really like the legacy GTs like Ryans or in a sedan. 2005's are getting somewhat reasonable. AWD coupes are pretty much impossible to come by except in a TT or a brand new BMW, so if your e dead se on th the TT is probably the best bet.
For economy cars, I think the scions are great, the new XB and XD promise to be really good cars and hopefully still a a good deal. Lots of new small cars are hitting the market now that look pretty interesting.

i'm very happy with my tt, i don't know what you have against them

if you give your car the proper maintenance, keep track of all your records, and drive it how its soposed to be driven(to perform) its a great car

all the guys i know with tt's take very good care of the cars and they run great with no major issues

just like any other car though there are some that could be a nightmare

My $.02 is go with a suburu. My dad works for Fuccillo Imports in Watertown (by fort drum). He says everyone who buys one only ever has to bring it back for oil changes. He has owned 3 of them and they have never left him stranded. They are fun to drive as I have driven 3 different STI's. One thing he says is that the STI is fun to drive but they suck in the winter because of all the power they produce. He keeps trying to get me to get rid of the Rado for a regular WRX....hahaha still wont do it
