bland front end and DSG only.....way to kill a good car. And now there is talk of not bringing the new Iroc concept here once released either.

Not saying I wouldn't drive one, but the way the wheels fit into the fenders, it seems to scream "economy"

I wonder how many they'll sell...

Those wheels are horrendous . . . I don't see why they wouldn't give the standard wheels that come on the EU R32.

Only reason why it is DSG only is because the 6mt is not drivetrain approved for NA. Purely cost-cutting reasons. Speaking of cost-cutting, notice that they have removed the rear window weatherstripping? Quite awful . . .

I am a bit disappointed too. I can't believe that there is no 6 speed option, since the the Sti and Evo which it is usually put up against come with the 6 speed (maybe 5speed in evo). I'd be willing to bet that they bring a 6 speed over here because a lot of buyers are put off by this. Same thing happened in the current BMW M5 and now those have a manual option.

This is just another screw up on VW's part, but they said this is what we were going to get months ago so its not really anything new I guess. The article says they only plan to bring over 5k of them so I imagine if the sales aren't good that will be it again for a while. However I did read that the MKV R32 is faster than the old one despite being heavier and only having 10hp more, but its still no where near where the power should be for the cars its going up against. When will VW learn:confused:

A chipped 2.0t will pwn the R32. How sad.

Just noticed that it doesn't have special seats or anything of that sort. I don't see what's going to set this car apart from the GTI, other than the outdated motor and AWD.

Deffinately, a chipped 2.0T would walk all over it, hell even a stock 2.0T would be dead even and probably faster in the top end. I wonder what they will do when they release the 230hp GTI's, thats getting awefully close in power stock.

The only thing I can think of is somehow cramming the 300hp FSI R36 motor from the B6 Passat into the Rabbits engine bay. I know they say it had fitment issues, but hell if vw enthusiests can squeeze a 12v vr6 into a mk1 rabbit, then I am sure the engineers at VW can pull this one off.

I just wish they would offer 4-motion on more models, like the Gti or with a diesel golf. I would be way more inclined to buy a new car if that were the case.

The only good side of this is hopefully it drops the originals price signifcantly.

They probably could fit the 3.6L in there but with the new crash requirements it probably doesn't leave enough crumple zone in a front end crash. Same reason why the new wranglers have V6's now, for a greater safety margin.

Pete, I wouldn't count on the old ones dropping in price that much. They are still a limited model and this one is going to be the same.

Hey a guy can dream cant he! :P

Once they drop below 15K is when I'll seriously start considering it. I check ebay and vortex classifieds weekly :icon_pcnoob:

Once again VW shows how bad their marketing department can be. No 6MT is just crazy.

Since there aren't any sales figures available perhaps the new GTi with a DSG is far outselling the 6MT version. It's the only reason I could think of for limiting US options.

I think they are only making this available with the DSG tranny is because they have a lot of money invested in that unit and for the most part people are not opting for it with the other vw and audi models. Therefore if they make that the only selection, they solve their problem of having all those units not sitting on the shelf.

I think VW thought this was going to revolutionize the industry and for the most part it has not lived up to the billing! Once they get their supply issue controlled I am sure there will be a 6MT available.

i'd take a mk4 r32 over the mk5 any day...i just dont care for the mk5 aesthetic design, of any mk5 cars for that matter...mk5 design looks like toyota

The motor that should really be in the R32 is a hi-po version of the 2.0T. Audi has been saying the TT-R will have a 270-280hp 2.0T.... that kind of power (and aftermarket tunability) of that kind of motor with AWD would be a killer combo... I guess R20 doesn't sound as cool as R32.

Going with the VR though gives VW a convenient excuse (wimping out) though as such a car will not be considered by the press/public as competition for the WRXs and EVOs of the world... I can see VW PR saying 'the R32 is for a "different" kind of driver'

yea, that is MUCH MUCH gayer.

Just ask Stu, he used to have it in his sig

Seriously though - 2.0T + AWD in that platform would kick some ass, or with a diesel. Europe is so friggin lucky! :P
