Ok guys, trying to compile some numbers for my argument with VW and the "stealership". My stock flywheel died at 23,000mi. Normal driving and no mods. Anyone else seen the flywheel (and clutch) die at that mileage?

I never have, my father has a 2004 Jetta 1.8T, no mods (yet) and it's at 58,500mi right now and have never had a problem.

i got 130,000 on my 2000 jetta...no problems...i think you just had a defective flywheel and VW is trying to be stingy

Stingy yes, but unfortuanately for me it's black and white as far as the warranty is concerned. It clearly states that clutch and flywheel are not covered beyond 12,000mi. I'm still making a stink though....maybe something will come of it.

How exactly did the flywheel "die"? Did other components fail and cause damage to the flywheel, or did it just explode, or what? I've had clutches dissentigrate and not harm the flywheel at all. I'm really curious about how the flywheel failed!

The clutch failed (with excessive slipping) and upon inspection the flywheel was so badly grooved that it could not be resurfaced/turned and had to be replaced.

That's what I pictured happened. Unfortunately, they'll claim driving style was the culprit and there's not much you'll be able to do about it. I've read about other people having similar issues... clutch failing just after the warranty. It's not too common, but it does happen. I wish you luck in your quest for justice w/ VWoA!!

Welcome to the site, btw!
