If you're going to do an AWD conversion on an MK2 which system would be best to go with? Why?

I vaguely remember someone mentioning that certain systems are better than others, just need clarification.

I found syncro set up for 900.00 but I don't want to entertain it if it wouldn't work.

I've seen some syncro cars selling for less than that. just gotta look and look again. I'd say it would be much easier to do the syncro not the 4-mo. Both will take some elbow grease and fabrication, but I've read the syncro is easier to swap. I also read the syncro set-up won't take a lot of hp... so keep that in mind. I'm sure there are people here willing to chime in that know way more about it than I do. Sounds like this car is gonna keep you here longer! GL!

yeah deff look around. i dont know what year. but older passats have syncro.
just like the rallye, they all bolt up but you will need to buy a new floor pan from the dealer. not sure who else makes em or contact brillantyellowg60 for more info since.. he has a rallye and some serious project cars that have snyrco. i would sh*t myself if i could find a wicked cheep passt snycro... some day i will...

isnt 4mo. a mk4 pattform?
..way to much custom fab for that one..

Oh no, Ha! This isn't for the VR-T I have here. This is for the 89 gti I picked up. I was thinking an all Motor 24v 3.2l VR6 with AWD.

That's what I thought remembered as well, that the syncro can't withstand the power.

So maybe 4motion is the way to go. Or maybe not.

um syncro cars are running in the 11's and 12's I am sure it can.. kev is in the 12's with his on a turbo setup which is way more torque on the drive train then an all motor would be.

the 4motion would requir tons of fabricationg to get the rear struts and floor in.. the syncro you will have to do the tunnel to the floorpan / and rerought the exhaust. prob a few other little things. but pretty much should work on any mk2 a2 car pretty easy

Does it have a torque rating? How are these guys running 12's and 11's? What needed to be beefed up to handle that kind of power? Or is this how they perform stock?

I was just going to mention that British Columbia in Canada has a couple of these done, and you can also get the syncro golf up there (no fabricating!)...

If I recall correctly, there is also a mkIV golf and New Beetle in Vancouver with a similar setup and VRT action!!! I remember an article from either VW Trends or Motor Trend or something like that. Unfortunately, VW Trends is no longer in publication:(...

That's right!! VW Trends, I knew there was another magazine besides performance VW but I couldn't remember the name of it. My cousin had like 5 years worth of VW trends (looking at those magazines and his two gti's is what gave me the VW bug).

Yeah, I don't think I need another VR-T. My next turbo car is a good three years away.

For now I just want AWD N/A VR6 goodness for under 5K!

It should be doable.

Paul and Kevin from DubR have sycno Mk2s. Paul's Mk2 GTI syncro VRT has made some good 1/4 mile runs (here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaIjAw8-zb0)).

Thinks to keep in mind:
-Even with the syncro parts from a B3 passat (canadian only no us cars) its not a straight bolt in.
-the Rallye parts are stronger and different than the standard Mk2 syncros
-syncro owns halidex (4motion) (mecanical > electrical)

There is a TON more info in the Mk2 forums and the Syncro/Quattro/Halidex if you search.
