Just ordered my timing belt kit, which includes water pump and tensioner pulley, timing belt, and accessory belts. Spark, plug, synthetic oil and OEM filter, air filter and brakes. Spent sort of a lot but this car needs to last me. I am just shy of 60k, going to change these within the next month. Any tips for doing a timing belt on a B5 passat. I know i need to remove the entire front clip :embarrassed:

you dont need to re move the front clip completely, t-belt is mad easy on your car!

Music to my ears. Depending if I can get a place warm enough to do it, I may be calling you up and bringing it to bridgeport, if you got the time

Pretty sure your engine has the internal water pump, but this DYI on the AEB should at least give you a good start.

I've done t-belt jobs on 3 v6's and 1 1.8t B5 and I took the front clip off of all of them. I suspended the front by my rafters and it made the jobs very easy. About 1/2 hour of time to take the clip off is totally worth it IMHO. The only real prob is the upper radiator hose needs to be separated. The 1.8t I did coulda been done w/o removing the front clip, but it's still a lil' tight and removing it will make putting the car to TDC and marking the belt much easier... not to mention providing an easier view of the water pump. The job is easy and my only real tip is to mark the belt and gears on two points on each gear (use a sharpie or white-out) and count and re count the teeth on the belt and the new belt. GL, Ryan! LMK if you have questions.

Also, check your motor mounts while you're in there... easy job on the 1.8t and totally worth new ones if one is shot.

Kyle and Dave did a great job replacing the TB on my AEB. IIRC, the biggest PITA was the water pump/thermostat and reconnecting the hood latch. One of the bolts for the tensioner (?) also broke so you might want to have a couple of extras around just in case. We were lucky as there was still some of the bolt sticking out so it could be removed with some vise grips.

Having multiple hands really helps too.

BTW, who did you buy your kit from?

I did one and had to take the whole front end off too. Fun fun. Good luck Ryan.

i think he means not taking the front clip on a B5 since the engine is longitude. I should do the chains on my B4 also, but i'd need to have the tranny off for that.

vr6 cars need to have the trans removed and 1.8t passats do not need the fron clip removed. just losened up so you can undo the lowwer serp belt pulleys!
