I'm sure some of you guys have already probably seen this, but this is a interesting thread on the Vortex 1.8T Tech Forum on a guy trying E85 and E85/Gas fuel mix on big turbo 1.8T motor. Very interesting reading IMHO. On our more modern motors (which are made to deal with gas with up to 10% ehtonal in it i.e. E90 or higher) this could have some interesting applicaitions.

VWvortex Forums1.8T Engine ForumE85 FTW, C16 got nothing on this (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2928987)

Results are nice....I'm not overly impressed with E85 in general so even if it were avaliable I don't think I'd ever use/get it.

That does look good, but its only because of the higher octane rating. E85 requires more fuel to be inejcted for the same amount of regualr gas which results in less fuel economy. While it is cheaper it does balance out against the higher unleaded gas prices. I do like to see the performance gains associated with it though, that does give an alternative for people who want higher octane fuel for less cost, you just have to give up fuel economy which for people looking for total performance, less mpg isn't a bad tradeoff:wink:

I think that in a year or two, E85 will eventually become readily available in the area (I think the state has passed some laws and some of its own intitiatives to make E85 available).

For those cars with agressive chips/tuning, I think a E85/Gas (50/50 mix or more gas than E85) mix can be a cost effective way to provide a little extra saftey margin.... kinda like a aky injection system does without the hassle of installing one on your car.

E85 Will be available very soon. Where I work I rub shoulders with Syracuse's big whiggs and I am certin that there is a Ethanol production plant being made in this area and I was told personally that E85 will be to Syracuse much sooner than anticipated. This guy is really working to push this stuff since there is a ton of money to be made i guess. Who knows what will pan out though, all I do know is there are definate plans for this stuff

Personally I wish E85 and this flex fuel movement would die....but I'll save the rant for another thread.

Seems E85 might not work quite as well as he'd hopped - Doh!

Maybe not.... A head with 100K on it floats a valve.... can't say with any degree of certainty that it was E85 that did him in.

It will be interesting to see how this all develops... I am interested in seeing if anyone with chipped 1.8T does some logging with a few gallons of E85 mixed in with a tank of 93.

Thats the only problem with cars that were not designed to run on E85, they might not always inject enough fuel to keep the AFR required for the condition because the ECU doesn't know what fuel is being used. E85 also eats through rubber fuel lines and injector O-rings on cars that were not designed for it which is why they don't recommend running it in older cars or some modern cars.
