Found one for $500, thinking about going to look at it. What should I look for? What are typical replacement parts on this thing (U-joints, etc...) Are they expensive to maintain? Im emailing him for more info, this is all I've got so far:

runs, fine actually. needs some things to get it registered. 4 wheel drive does work, -and is why i am selling it. somebody may find it usefull.. otherwise its going to cars for kidneys for the tax discount..

new tires
nice interior
outside rather ugly
2 owners including myself.

needs muffler etc..

Any input is appreciated, things I should ask etc... Thanks.

They are really good trucks especially with the 6 (straight), the older V6s are junk. Parts aren't bad at all either, you don't have to order anything. Any chain store will have everything you need.
I would ask the guys out at the B'ville shop also, they seem to like them.
I have a muffler you can have, lol.

most exhaust manifolds on those are cracked, check u joints and make sure that the 4wd goes in and out of gear with no problem.

My dad bought a '92 2-door brand new in '93. It's been a great truck and the 4.0 HO straight 6 is (as Ryan said) a great engine. However, just recently he had some problems and dumped about $1,200 into it (including labor). Evidently there is a computer control module for the ignition switch (sound familiar?) that went bad. Didn't figure that out until replacing almost every other ignition component. Just did U-joints and also has some grinding noises... prolly wheel bearings. These problems you'll pretty much find on any car that old.

My only recommendation stems from personal experience w/ our '95 Cherokee. Check the transfer case for leaks and smooth operation! We had a seal blow and lost the TC. It was over a grand to replace. Also, no matter what 4wd you buy, immediately replace the diff. (front & rear) & tranny fluid!! Nobody ever does it and it's very necessary!

Like said above ... listen to exhaust mani for leaks, if you can get under it and give the driveshafts a good shove they should not move, if not and they are loose they will clunk loudly when shifting into gear and vibrate going down the road. The front axle u-joints are going if they clunk when the truck is moving and the steering is at full lock. Otherwise they are pretty solid. They are no where near as expensive to maintain as Kyle and co. mentioned if you can find good used parts and do the work yourself.

Thanks for all the usefull replies! Got some stuff to look for when checking it out, and hopefully Todd from the garage will go with me.

On a side note, what is considered a conservative lift for these vehicles? (1,2,5 inches?) Or maybe a better question is how high can I lift it with out swapping out major components? I'd like to raise it a bit and get some bigger tires, so maybe I can have some fun in the summer too

P.S. Brent2 if you see this, can you still get camo cut outs at work? I may be getting a little ahead of myself, but, what is a new endeavor with out plans

You can do it really cheap if you want. Coil spacers and add or leafs can be had even cheaper than that. Check our jeepforums.com or net or org. They have a bunch of cheap setups.

Pete - a 2" coil spacer/leaf block kit would be perfect and cheap. You cant get too crazy on XJs with tires because the fender openings are small. If it needs rockers, fenders etc.. I can get it all through work for ya. www.jeepsunlimited.com is a really good site too

Got a reply today, sounds even more promising....

hi, it is a 4.0 auto. the 4wd does work, I never used Low only 4H It
was great last winter. mileage is 180 -high yes but the engine is not
bad. Yes i am the second owner, the other women was in cape cod and you
can see this from salt damage on the hood. the jeep then moved to
rochester, then to a dealer here in syr. (car-fax) The women was good with the jeep, she must have babied it. I was not to bad.. it is just getting old, registration was up & i did not feel like fixing muffler.
Yes i would think we are "talking muffler and pipes?" price can be talked about for these reasons.

Im gonna see if I can take a look at it, maybe show up with $300 cash and see if he bites...

Check for oil leaks especially on the 4.0l models. I have had a 1995 and a 1993 cherokee both of which devolped pretty bad oil leaks where the tranny meets the engine. So I am guessing its the rear main seal. Other than no complaints. Until I blew the rearend because like Kyle said, the rear diff fluid was never changed.

fluid changes would be no.1 on my list if I get it.

Gonna try and check it out today or tomorrow!
