Ok, so I'm bent on putting a lsd in my car and doing synchros. My wife would prefer that I spend the money on a built tranny so I don't dissapear into the garage for the winter. So I've been shopping and have a bunch of questions that I hope some of y'all can help with. (Also, sorry to Jay for hi-jacking his thread!)
Here's what's up so far... I found an ebay auction for a built G60 tranny w/ a quiafe and cryo coated gears. Also, Brent pointed out a built G60 tranny w/ peloquin and VR gearing. I got the gearing for both and I'm not sure what I really want...
Ebay tranny:
This is a 1991 G60 Trans Either an ATA or AYL code I am unsure. Ratios are: ATA 3.78 2.11 1.35 .97 .80 Final 3.68 AYL 3.78 2.12 1.43 1.03 .84 Final 3.68
The O2A listed on the tex (as presented by Brent above) is touted as a G60 tranny w/ VR6 gearing and shows the following:
Input Ratio: 3.38 Final Drive Ratio 3.38
Gear - Input - Output
1 - 3.3 - 3.30
2 - 1.94 - 1.94
3 - 1.34 - 1.34
4 - 0.97 - 0.97
5 - 0.795 - 0.80
So... is the second tranny really built to the VR spec? It seems like such a drastic difference. How would the first feel compared to what I currently have? Is the second really a VR set-up?
Also, can somebody explain what I should be looking for in ratios? Like, is lower final gonna give me a higher top speed and lower RPM's in highway cruising? I just want to know what I'm getting myself into for this kinda money!! TIA!
I thought VR Corrado's had a CCM trany code, but this thread (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2905638) says I should have a CDM w/ a 3.647 final. Also, CCM's & CHM's are in Passats & Golf/Jetta III and had a 3.389 final.
This other thread (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2899565) people mention doing a 3.94 w/ a tall 5th. gets through gears very quick and has good hi-way mpg. But, it's also recommended no to do this w/ a boosted car, b/c you can't shift fast enough.
I plan on boosting w/ a SC sometime down the road (it's a long road). So... will the 3.3 be too low and slow me down on the autocross track until I get a SC?? Also, the ebay tranny is done on a G60 spec and has a final of 3.68. How is this diff. from the SLC tranny (assuming CDM w/ 3.647)??
I think I want the 3.6 not the 3.3 final... but I'm still not sure! Somebody please give opinions!!
