Waukegan police are investigating a fatal two-car collision that occurred this morning at the intersection of Waukegan Road and Norman Drive.
Kery T. Bond, 35, of the 39200 block of Lewis Avenue, Beach Park, died in the crash, according to Dr. Richard Keller, the Lake County coroner. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
Bond's red Jeep Commander apparently slammed into a light pole, crushing the passenger cabin of the vehicle. He worked at a car dealership and was on his way to work, according to Keller.
As of mid-morning, firefighters and rescue crews were still on the scene.
The other vehicle involved, a blue Jeep Wrangler, sat nearby with its front end smashed in. Information on the driver of the Wrangler was not available.
that is freakin CRAZY :err:

that had sun roofs (3 in total), you can see the 2nd row split sun roof in a few picts.
Sun roof or not though thats an insane amount of damage...

it is.... I have been here thinking about that.....it is too bad they dont design vehicals with the cage concept and say for safety sake.... sorry you dont get 3 sunroofs...just one....
this looks like maybe it was t tops and a sunroof.....is that a new design??? hard to tell from pic of mangled metal.... it hit hard enough to bend the sub frame....

Nope, they aren't t-tops ( to my knowledge), just glass panels, and I think you can slide a cover over them on the inside of the vehicle. This make me think of what would happen to the new Nissan Quest vans and Maxima sedans that have those full length sunroof things (the van has two, and I think a front sunroof too, the maxima only has the lenghtwise middle one.).

It was the X3, the smaller one BMW offers, my parent's test drove one, but the sunroof kept them away. You can also get the Pontiac G6 and Mini Coopers with full roof sun roofs.

There are alot of factors that we don't know about...speed being one. How fast was this guy/girl going? If its a 20mph crash...yeah...I can see that being very poor design...50 or 60 mph...I'm not so suprised. I would think that this has nothing to do really with the strenth of the roof...more the strenth of the side structures. If this truck flipped over and landed on its roof...I'm sure the whole thing would not cave in...most likey the "safety shell" would have kept its shape...for the most part this is a pretty freak accident. Hitting a poll like that at mid to high speeds would concentrate a lot of energy into a very small area...in an area that I doubt would ever be test for this type of thing happening. How many car makers test this...all I know about for my MKV is that it has high side and front crash raidings...do they have a flipping over into a pole crash rating?

Good God! My stomoach gets tied in knots just looking at those pics.
The roof structure on that car had to deal with allot of mass at the front (engine) and rear of the car that wanted to keep moving when the roof made contact with that light pole... hard to see how most any large car would hold up well in such a accident. The only company I've ever seen or heard about doing multiple roll over accident simulations is Volvo and Merceedees... given thier rep, I would expect one of thier cars would hold up better in usch a accident, but if you do hit anything hard enough it will evenually bend/break.
oh man that is a nasty crash.
I did a brief search to find out if the Commander does infact have a Safety Cage and to my shock I can not find that info any place. The Jeep website does not even indicate that it does ...... under "Safety/Security" It only indicates that it received the Governments Highest rating for frontal crash testing.
Although the vehicle may have one, and I doubt that it would of made much of a difference in this "not so typical" crash ...........
It is very sad that in this day and age, the year of 2006, vehicles are taking steps backwards in safety features.

friends of mine got hit by a train at 30 or 40 mph and rolled in front of it a few times before the car was slid to the side. the car was a 88 volvo 4 door. they all lived and honestly the car was really banged up on the outside but the cabin was pretty much sound, at least good enough to live out of....of course that car took a side impact initial blow to start momentom before it took multiple hood impacts from the ground and train. I think I still have pics of the car in some old photo's....I could sell them to volvo for advertising..hmmmm
I dont think safety is going backwards...i do think luxury stands in the way of safety. That little smart car was built with a true cage design....

I wonder what my MKV would do in the same type of crash...a lot less mass...not as much meat to wrap around the pole (like what RichB said)...but should would be nice to find out...anyone have an extra MKV around? I know there is a free MKIII up on here...maybe we should run some tests? Anyone interested?
