POR-15® is a high-tech, high performance rust-preventive coating designed for application directly on rusted or seasoned metal surfaces. It dries to an incredible rock-hard, non-porous finish that won't chip, crack, or peel, and it prevents rust from recurring by protecting metal from further exposure to moisture. Use it to coat rusty frames, floor pans, farm equipment, marine equipment, or even a heavily corroded battery tray. POR-15® is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be topcoated for prolonged exposure to sunlight. Topcoating is not required for areas not exposed to sunlight.
Our products are designed to work as a complete system. When used together, they provide you with a finish that will not only stop rust, but will also prevent it from returning. We guarantee your satisfaction unconditionally!

the mk1 guys use POR-15 and one other product all the time...the other product (cant recall the name right now) might be a better choice as it dosent require as much prep/coats/steps as POR-15 stuff.

how thick are you looking for it to be? and also what kind of $ are you looking to spend? ive seen various rattle can options for something like this, but they dont always come out as thick as if you were to buy a gallon of stuff thats almost like that "rhino" spray on liner or whatever.

Keep in mind that por15 needs to be top coated. It doesn't hold up well to UV rays.
If you are not dealing with rusty stuff, chip guard and good automotive paint would be alot better and cheaper. I would only really use POR15 under the car or on suspension/drivetrain parts. The finish on it is not too great, IMO unless its sprayed.

i know of rust bullet, and it would be a pita to use for a large area. I would have to sand it all down first. and since I am not conserned about rust its a bit over excessive....

I just recently bought some of that Rust Bullet stuff. After posing about it on vwvortex it seemed to be the winner. I'm going to be using it on some rust on the outside of my Jetta and on some other bubbled spots that I'm going to chip at and lightly sand to get the chips out of. I think that I paid 28 bucks for a pint of it through Rust Bullet's NY distributor on Long Island. I'm going to be using it soon, I'll tell ya how well it works out, it already seems simpler to use b/c of the fewer steps you need to take.

then POR-15 is not the answer to your problem then either....POR-15 has more steps and prep than rust bullet according to everything I've read.
